Just wondering, does anybody know what happened to the Descanso? spent many a night in that old car with Chard and some of the guys before Slow & Pokey put their line through at Summit. I know this really dates me!!!
I vaguely remember - because it was a very long time ago - seeing some article about an old interurban having been trucked out of there, having finally been obtained by some trolley museum. This may very well have been the Descanso. No doubt, I'll be wracking my brains for the next couple of weeks trying to remember when and where I read this. -Phil
Cajone's Pass?Cajones are what dangle between your legs. The railroad pass is...CAJON!! The "Descanso" now reposes at the Orange Empire Railway Museum, where it is being restored to its PE operational appearance, complete with the sliding "rack" for the casket of the deceased on their last trolley ride. The "Descanso" did stay up at the summit of Cajon Pass for a few years after the Southern Pacific opened their line; I remember it being there in 1971, just north of the road crossing at SP"s "Hiland" siding (their version of "Summit" on the AT&SF/BNSF).
Thanks, glad to hear somebody saved her. Yep your right -- in the winter thats what third trick dispatch was, and the nickname amongest other things when you got a wet pm callout -- loved it though.
