For those of you who knew nothing about modelling on a computer and learnt how to use TS Modeller, can you tell me how long it's taken for you to grasp most of its basic functions and features? You see, I studied the first several screens of the instructions file to TS Modeller some months ago, and it dawned on me that the whole prospect of having to learn a complex software package really put me off trying it out. I haven't touched TS Modeller since that time.Cheers,

RE: learning TS Modeller: how much time does it take?

It took me a few days to learn it. I did all of the tutorials contained in the help section and did a lot of reading in this and the other train-sim forums. It was my first time working with any 3D modeling program but I found it fairly easy to learn.Eric

RE: learning TS Modeller: how much time does it take?

For building basic shapes (structures) TSM is a nice tool and a quick program to learn. Do the tutorials, learn how to build a box, texture it, and export it into the sim. Once you begin to get the hang of TSM, you'll find texturing takes much longer than actually building the object.A fellow simmer was kind enough to give me some basic pointers over the phone, and I was building simple structures the first evening. RE: learning TS Modeller: how much time does it take?

Like you, I was a complete newbie at computer based modelling.I went and got TSM, which was only version 1 at the time, had a look, had a go, and promptly decided that maybe that this was not for me.A couple of months later I took another look and started to model, by which time the updated version 1.1 was available. This made things a bit easier to do. The hardest thing to get right was the scaling of the backdrop. This will have a direct effect on the size of the finished model. Once I had that learnt, the rest was not easy, but became fun to learn because there was now the distinct possibility of producing a model to the correct size.I still give that model a run once in a while, just to remind myself that not too long ago I had convinced myself that this was impossible. My modelling has improved quite a bit since then and I have learnt quite a bit about Train Sim Modeller. It has its limits and it has its good bits, but then so do the other modelling tools out there. The overall timespan, a couple of months to talk myself into believing that I could actually do it, a couple of weeks to get a hold of the basics, and about 10 months of producing gradually improving models.Once you take the plunge it becomes easier as time goes on.Mervyn

It took me a couple of days. I started with one of the tutorials but something I learned from my programming days is to dive in and do a real project. An old programmer's saying is "The only way to learn programming is to program." The same thing applies to TSM. Now if I could just figure out what makes 3D Canvas click!Cal Rasmussen

Hey, many thanks for your feedback you folks. At the time it just seemed a real bother to learn another programme. I'll give it a shot sometime over the upcoming Hols.Cheers,
