Can you tell what is wrong and what I forgot to do? Look carefully as all the info you need is there. If any of the other forum members who work for the railroad spot it, keep quiet and let's see how well the MSTS users know their stuff. BTW this a control stand from an SD38-2 (UPY 834).PatchCrew

RE: What's Wrong In This Cab Shot?

Hmmm...I see brake cylinder indicating about 40 psi AND ammeter indicating a bit over 500 amps drive to the motors in notch 1.Are you warming up the traction motors? Making coffee? Stretching slack?

Let me address some of the posts.ssw - Both headlight switches are on and in the dim position.ssw_96 - What would constitute a wrong position for the reverser?3DRailHound - You are not allowed to play. chucksc - I didn't know you be could fired for power braking but if you mean the same as these guys...Macster(Post #4), AEM7AC 920, Vince - Basically you guys are right. What I was looking for was if you guys could tell me if I was moving or stopped. If you could determine that I was stopped by looking at the independent brake cylinder pressure reading 45 psi (which is max on this loco and the not the normal 72 psi) then you would also notice that the throttle was in Run 1 and the ammeter was at 600 amps and you would realize that I forgot to return the throttle back to idle after stopping. I never noticed that until looking at the picture.Edit: To clarify although you can't see the independent brake handle the independent brakes are set. oakwaysd60 you are looking at the automatic brake valve which is released.Want to play again? Then see the post titled "Eagle Eyes Part 2".PatchCrew

Amtrak guys around here tell me they get an unpaid vacation if they get caught with the throttle in other than idle and brakes applied....
I've heard it referred to as power braking by them and used to be used as a way of keeping the train stretched when entering a station IIRC if you used the automatic brakes against the power. If you worked the throttle against the independants it was still Powerbraking IIRC but sloppy train handling (You forgot to take it out of "park" before tryin to leave the station)
New stuff, the software supposedly won't let you do any of that....
It'll just disable/cut out the throttle/controller when brake cylinders are pressurized above a certain amount....Chuck Schneider

RE: What's Wrong In This Cab Shot?

Having the throttle open with the brakes applied and stopped is one thing, but power braking as you explained it, that is to keep the slack stretched while slowing down or stopping is absolutely necessary in certain situations so it is not frowned upon.PatchCrew

RE: What's Wrong In This Cab Shot?

Oh, I hate to say this, but I beg to differ on the BNSF....Due to fuel conservation, BNSF engineers are NOT allowed to power brake in ANY way, shape, or form. If you want a slap on the wrist, just let a road foreman pull your tapes and see that you were in ANY position other than IDLE when you applied the air...In fact, we are being told here that we had better be in Dynamic Braking before any air applications are made, or we are in trouble. Try that the next time your climbing a hill and need to set the air LOL.

Chaz

RE: What's Wrong In This Cab Shot?

Ok I can understand them not allowing you to stretch brake (as we call it) on level terrain but surely you can't be expected to not stretch brake when ascending a grade. That's insane but I believe you because I understand how things work on the railroad. PatchCrew

RE: What's Wrong In This Cab Shot?

I just asked the VRE engineer I ride in with today (He's actually an Amtrak employee) and he confirmed that (and he guessed it was to save fuel and accelerated equipment wear) that "Power Braking" was verbotten....
Again the new software on the Acela Express/HHP8/Genesis/AEM7ac won't let you do it but the F40s and E60s certainly could....Chuck Schneider

RE: What's Wrong In This Cab Shot?

That might explain why some of the Amtrak engineers can't bring the train to a smooth stop at stations nowadays... Recent trip to Chicago i took, i remember thinking, at almost every station stop, "PASSENGER COMFORT LEVELS EXCEEDED". LOL!------ BUZZ ------

Geez, It makes us Aussies look slack compared to over in the US!I have seen "power braking" done lots of times down here in Australia. Mainly on "N Class" Passenger locos over in Melbourne. >Mike Forster<

RE: What's Wrong In This Cab Shot?

>>>I forgot to return the throttle back to idle after stopping.<<<Seen that. One of the mainline engineers brought a train back from Taconite Harbor, 4 or 5 units with 9 loaded ash cars.Pulled it into the transfer yard about 2 in the morning and parked it, day shift would empty it.Then he did everything wrong: forgot it in first notch, didn't put the reverser in neutral and remove, didn't move the generator field to off. At least he had the independent on and some air off.Next morning, "we have bells ringing and it won't move".He fried 20 traction motors and only got 5 days off for it.He was pretty quiet for about a month though.Gotta love the railroad.Bob and O'Riley

I am going to take a stab at this. There is no speedometer in the picture."Half awake half a world away

>>>BTW I was only stopped for a minute and I only had light engines so no harm was done.<<<I'm sure, or you wouldn't be taking these pictures. What drives me crazy is people who have never even sat in a train tell me how easy it is.A dear old friend of mine, used to be a 49'er, tells me how hard it is to drive pilings with 90' of stick, but, "to drive a train, just put it in forward or reverse and go".Indeed, try going down 2% grade with a foot of snow on the rail without warmin' em up first. And one little "oops" and you can cause thousands of dollars in damage. This is just a minor one:What's Wrong In This Cab Shot? – image 19Happy Holidays,Bob and O'Riley
