For the last week or so, I have been lucky enough to catch CN trains daily in Syracuse, though only once was I smart enough to have my camera. For the most part, I see them going north out of the city through Liverpool, heading north towards Watertown and Canada, and south from the same direction. My question is where are they going to here in the states. Do they have trackage rights on CSX to a certain point, or what? Just curious where they operate, as I have seen them daily now. Prior to this week, I have not seen them, but I often here the horns throughout the day and night on the line through Liverpool ,which I believe CSX owns.Chris Bogley

Nope, when you are seeing them, they are just CSX trains with CN power. They run from the large yard at Selkirk, NY to Massena, NY where the train is handed over to CN and vice versa.

That explains it then, becasue the one I saw today was coming west off the CSX main at downtown, and onto the branch to go up north, but today is was all CN power, 4 of them. Pretty cool to see, as this is my first time seeing them in person.Chris Bogley

Cool Chris.Could be CN 154- Toronto-New York. Usually runs Toronto to aldershot with 5-25 Intermodal cars. Then lifts 30-50 loaded racks at aldershot. But he only ever has 1 loco. So must be a different train.

Yes, definetly not that one. These two trains usually haul mixed freight, consisting of mainly lumber and LPG gas.

RE: CN in Syracuse Question

CN trains are q620 and q621. between massena and montreal they run as cn327 and cn326 respectively and have cn crews operating them. they also frequently have stack cars. if you want to see some pictures of them i have a few posted over at railpictures.net. there was some kind of of extra train running friday. all empty stack cars that came into massena behind a csx c40-8w and sd60m with a cn sd40-2 trailing. the csx power went back south light and they used the cn engine to take the train to canada. there was also a BNSF dash 9 and HLCX SD40-2 #7171 in BNSF paint up here last week too.joeCN in Syracuse Question – image 7
