Hmmm, too bad I don't live in the US. But I'm sure they don't hire 17 year olds anyway. /JonatanSteam rules!

RE: UP hiring like mad!

This is the first time I've seen them take people without any work experience/degrees. UP wants to add over 5000 train service positions over the next three years so this is just the beginning.AustinA Proud Supporter of the:

Scratch that... its BNSF that wants to... even tho UP's already buried them according to some.

RE: UP hiring like mad!

Actually, I talked to a guy up at the NARS school in Kansas City earlier today and he was saying both BNSF and UP were looking to add 5000+ over the next 3-5 years. But still, if you want a job on the railroad, you have a good chance of getting one now!AustinA Proud Supporter of the:

RE: UP hiring like mad!

I guess I shouldn't have said that the way I did... as I didnt' know you'd heard that about UP having similar plans...
I really hope I can get on board with one of these companies now(and anyone else who fits the requirements should attempt)... as in 3-5 years if you're just hiring out you'll have several thousand others above you in seniority. And if you're able to get on now-- there will be several thousand other Switchmen and Conductors you can bump in a few years!

RE: UP hiring like mad!

It's a great job if you can tolerate it. I can tell you there are a lot of people that can't. When I hired out a little over 8 months ago I was 1832 on the NH99 roster on the BNSF now I am #1747. For me it's still a great job even after having to put up with the crap such as the company turning down valid claims, or having to work a midnight job. If you do hire out my advice would be to not try to jump on the road right away. There are a few guys who I hired out with who did go straight out to the road and now don't know how to switch when they come back in the yard. Learn how to railroad first it'll will help you infinitely. Personally I like switching, I enjoy knowing I can switch well especially if you get some old engineer who comes off that engine saying you just did about the best job he's seen. Also, listen to those old heads when they tell you something. They know what they are talking about. None of us really want to be on that 12 hour work train or that midnight yard job that goes off to the pits of the yard but you have to learn about it sometime. Remember it's all about seniority or the lack of seniority depending on what end of the stick you're on. Sometimes hiding out on that midnight brakeman spot isn't so bad especially when winter comes. You definitely won't be the first to get bumped off! Also remember those first couple years probably won't be the major bucks and you might wind up cut off for awhile in January but if you're willing to make that sacrifice and you can put up with the crap that you WILL (there is no maybe about that) go through then yeah it's a great job. Just remember what you're signing on for.

RE: UP hiring like mad!

Just FYI we do not have systemwide senority so you wouldn't be able to bump several thousand Trainmen. Your senority would only apply on the service unit (division) that you hire at. For example I work out of West Colton CA and I only have seniority rights for the Los Angeles and West Colton areas. So if you hired out now, in 3 to 5 years you would only have senority over any others who hire out after you at your home service unit only.PatchCrew

RE: UP hiring like mad!

That's one nice thing about the BNSF we have that systemwide seniority. So basically you can go where your seniority will take you provided you are qualified on the territory.

I've seen them take people without any work experience/degreesThey just want people who can handle the job. When UP hired their last class in Denver, 60% of the class quit before training was done. They spend thousands of dollars on training for these people who can't cut it. Thats why the railroads keep hiring and hiring lately (and UP underestimated their traffic volumes).Nick
