As I was walking home from school today, I had to stop for a Passing LRV. As It was coming it passed by a sign that said POWER GAP POWER OFF, and as it passed the sign, the pantograph arched. What is this device? Does it seperate power regions? Part of block signaling? Edit: My Diagram was screwed up...
It's an isolated section on the catenary, to keep from the pantograph connecting two power sources. They are told to power off to avoid jerking the LRV and possibly having to reset it. It happened when I was riding in the cab on Dallas' DART system. The idiots who built the line put an isolated section halfway up a bridge crossing a road, right after leaving a station... so basically the LRV HAS to be under power to make it over the hill but they have to power off... *rolls eyes* as we went over, the operator ended up arc'ing the LRV and had to apply the trackbrakes, then reset it to get it to start up again and cross the hill. Fortunately we managed to coast over the isolated section (which was only about 10 feet long anyways) before stopping.I'm sure they needed an isolated section nearby, but you'd think they could at least have put it on the DOWN side of the hill for the normal flow of traffic or a flat spot; the bridge was the only grade for a while.Probably would have cost $1000 to bring that power source for the new segment 200 feet down the line. Anyway, hope that answers your question.Tim Frost The Union Atlantic Railroad: Your stuff's important!
Yeah, I have no idea why it was so big. And, it won't hurt the panto, nor do any permanent damage to the LRV, I think worst case is it has to be reset, no biggie. Of course if you end up bridging the two segments... uh oh... but that's pretty much impossible with just a pantograph.Tim Frost The Union Atlantic Railroad: Your stuff's important!
