20,000,000 Australians on 4 December (appeared on the Australian Beuraeu of Statistics web site http://www.abs.gov.au)Dennis Trewin, Australian Statistician announced about a month ago that on 4 December, 2003, Australia's population is estimated to reach 20,000,000.While it will not be feasible to determine who exactly the 20 millionth Australian will be because of the variable nature of population increases, it will be:a person born around that day or
a person who arrives as a permanent settler in Australia or
an Australian citizen returning home after living overseas for more than 12 months. To mark this important milestone in Australia's demographic history, the population clock on the ABS web site (www.abs.gov.au) will also display the 20,000,000 figure for a 24 hour period: from 11.30am 4 December to 11.30am 5 December.Officially we will be 20,000,000 on 4 December
ABS baby certificate to help celebrate 20,000,000
Current world population from the US Bureau of the Census: 12/01/03 6,333,168,366 They reckon it will take another 80 years for Australia to reach a population of 40 million. We're very slooooooooooooooooooowly invading!!!

Bwahaha!!! We Canadians are already way ahead of you (32,000,000 aprox.)But Canada's population does not grow very fast. According to Statistics Canada, our population will only grow to 36,000,000 by 2026, so you Aussies will probably overtake us in less than 200 years!Jonathan Nikiforovs.

Thanks for that mate. I have been away from Civilisation for a while and have not been able to keep up with the news. Except Simon Crean stepped down as Labour Leader <*Cheers, cracks open a bottle of 'bubbly'*>I'm planning on doing population studies as one of my units at university next year. Its great to see us Aussies hit 20mill, but from a global view, I don’t think we will reach 7 billion for a long time, perhaps if ever. If you compare the birth and death rates of a lot of the European countries, mainly Italy and Greece, The birth rate is 1.1 that is well below the required limit for a country to "repopulate" itself when the elder generation dies. In English, (lol) The population of Europe is slowly beginning to decline. I also think that it would be wise to assume this would happen in the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. At the start of the 20th Century, the average female would have 3-6 children. But compared to today, the average female in Australia would have 1-2 children. Therefore, the population is declining.Sorry if I went on for too long, but once I get started on this sort of stuff, I can’t stop. LOL Thanks again for sharing with us the news!

>Living in the most isolated city in the world makes it even more bliss Agreed If we did not have the communications that we have today, it would be fairly crap, but lucky we are in the 21st Century! Geographically, we are super isolated from the rest of the world, but due to changes in technology, we are not all that isolated which is a plus. 23.5 hour flight to London (winds, QANTAS permitting)>Mike Forster<

RE: OT - you might find this interesting

you realise of course that only 3 US cities are bigger than Sydney's 4.1 million? LA, Chicago and New York. I dont feel all that isolated to tell the truth, though to get to another city over a million people I have to drive 900km north (Brisbane) 900km south (Melbourne) 1400km west (Adelaide) or about 4000km west (Perth). And theres virtually nothing in between.

• Population of Western Australia as at 2001, 1,928,400 people.

• Perth Region population is 1,469,900 people and growing at 1.7% per annum (includes Mandurah).

Perth is bigger than Adelaide, impressively enough.

Gahh, Crappy Year 12 Geography book. I read the small print and it said figure of 1999. Up until 1995, Mandurah was not counted as apart of Perth, but both the development of Perth and Mandurah has increased the size of both cities so they are counted as a "counurbation" nowdays Where abouts did you get those figures? If its online I would love to have a look at some statistics. >Mike Forster<

>I'm not. Who'd want to live in Adelaide? LMAO!!! Good Call. I have been there. I got the Indian Pacific from Perth to Adelaide with my family, then drove to Melbourne. We were in Adelaide for 5 days, on day 3, we were bored. Its not really the place to be for us young fellas. Best place (and only place worth visiting): Dry Creek Yard! >Mike Forster<

re: post 2 - None should try to predict things like that. In the 70s it was widely believed that no more than 2 billion people would be alive today because of environmental, farming, and other such problems. The western world is in decline but many other nations are growing fast, in Africa for instance. And if all else fails we can start cloning.OT - you might find this interesting – image 23
