Nice pics. It's a safe bet that trailing F40 smoked a lot because it was providing HEP to the train. If VIA's F40s don't have segregated HEP generators it would have been in run-8 all the time, which is a lot of work for the locomotive and thusly produces a lot of smoke. If the F40s do have a segregated HEP kit then it [can] smoke noticably more but doesn't always. EDIT: Man is 6441 FILTHY! It looks like it's spent its whole life as a trailing unit with all that soot on the windshield! Tim Frost The Union Atlantic Railroad: Your stuff's important!
Naw Tim, some of the F40's just haven't had much work done on them in a while, that's why they smoke. Quite a few of the Corridor-assigned units seem to smoke just as bad, if not worse. Also, VIA's F40's are a little more advanced than Amtrak's were/are (they're only 10 years younger after all), so they only need to be in Run 5 to be producing HEP....they still scream though.Nice pics Rob!DanMaking a mockery of serious business for 23 years.
