That's our subway! Even though I've been to the site before, there appears to be new articles...MTA Going your way for 100 years. 1904-2004 YOU THERE! Yes, you! Step off the roof of that train! Subway surfing is dangerous and illegal!
I also found similar pages when browsing the web recently, and one very interesting story I found is the one of the subway in the belgian city of Charleroi - they built a subway system, which remained far smaller than planned because they ran out of money, but after building some lines around downtown they built an entire branch to the suburbs before noticing that the cost of operating that branch would be higher than any possible revenue generated by that line, so it rests almost completed, but unused to the present day. See those pages on that topic:http://acity.online.fr/snapshots/chrlroi/chrlroi.html http://www.urbanadventure.org/2003/2002trip/belgium/chet.htmI live in Hamburg, Germany and all that we have concerning unused facilities are several unused platforms (because the line they were built for, the U4, was never built), that's lousy compared to what they did in Belgium. The best known unused platforms in Hamburg are those located at Hauptbahnhof Nord ("Central North") (we have Central North and Central South, both located next to Central Station, since all the lines wouldn't fit into one of the two stations). They were intended to be a part of a subway line called U4, which was supposed to be completed in the mid-70s, but was never even begun building as the city ran out of money. But as Hauptbahnhof Nord was opened in '68, it was built with 4 platforms to accomodate both the U2 and U4 lines, of which only the U2 is operating by today. Here are some pictures: The two outer of the total 4 platform tubes of Central North are unused. They are both shut off with a fence. A look into one of the two tubes - the workers got quite far before the construction was cancelled, even some of the commercial spaces were equipped with posters. On this old directory, the tram still exists! (Bottom left, next to the S in a circle) The Hamburg tram was shut down and removed in 1978. "Coming to 1, Mönckebergstreet on October 31st" (1968, that is) An ad by a department store called Horten, which is gone for more than a decade now. There are 3 or 4 more stations in Hamburg that have abandoned plat- forms, and there are also the remains of a station that was complete- ly removed in the 1960's. But what's even more interesting is that 11 stations all over the city are so-called "multiple purpose facilities" - which means nuclear shelters, remains of the cold war, some of them as new as 1991.The following links might not be too interesting if you don't speak German, but they are about one of those facilities (subway station "Harburg Rathaus") and about an inspection of the shelter that took place last year. Even if you don't understand it, there are some good pix on that site.http://www.lostplaces.de/zs-hamburg/index.html http://www.lostplaces.de/zs-hamburg/bunkertest/index.htmlUnused/old subways are an interesting topic, and I'm trying to find out what I can about such sites in my city.PvF
