Maybe I missed something in the news. Today I was visiting the SEPTA West Trenton station here in New Jersey, which also has CSX freight go through on the eastbound track. Just my luck, I saw lights approaching and when it got near, it was the headlights of a Union Pacific diesel engine (2 of them, actually)! What gives?!? They were heading east/north hauling boxcars mainly.Tomorrow I'll take my camera up there if I get ambitious.

RE: UP Locos in New Jersey?

they seem to be regular visitors to pavonia lately just this past wed i saw 8900 and 8913 ac4400's with flags on the sides..they park them under the 27th st bridge in camden quite often..my guess is that they were heading to oak island when you saw them

RE: UP Locos in New Jersey?

It is not uncommon to see foriegn road power from the west in the east. I saw a UP sitting in Enola the other day, and UP and BNSF are frequent on NS and CSX trains, especailly the coast to coast hot soht intermodels. Also saw a unpatched BN SD 40 in Syracuse last week on a grain train.Chris Bogley

RE: UP Locos in New Jersey?

Hey SharkNose. Do you know what numbers the UP units were or what make? The reason i ask is because since CSX has the Q-100 and 153 coming out of and coming into Little Ferry yard (north of Oak Island) the 100 always has a solid consist of 4 UP AC4400CTE's (i think thats what they are) and when there is not going to be a Q-153 (northbound) CSX usually uses them in freight service. They are usually used on trains Q-417 and Q-418. They both go from Selkirk yard to Pavonia NJ. The 417 is southbound and the 418 is northbound. And since this past week there was no Q-153 and no Q-100 they used the power from last weeks Q-100 in freight service on the two trains. I believe the unit numbers were 5900 and 5913. Hope that helps."Half awake half a world away

RE: UP Locos in New Jersey?

Well, NYSW4004, I'll have to do some homework on that. I didn't notice the numbers yesterday and I'm not too swift on engine identification. I did see a UP engine a couple of weeks ago, so it might be a common occurrence now. I didn't get out today (now that I think about it, I didn't hear any trains at all), but I will go on another hike (with my camera) this coming weekend. I'll post back after that.

RE: UP Locos in New Jersey?

Well i do know that on CSX's Riverline there has been a number of UP units sometimes solid trains with UP power! I know if you get Railpace on last months back cover there was a picture taken from Bear Mountain State Parck which is by the Riverline and in the picture there is an Intermodal led by 3 UP units even one of the units was a SD90MAC. So it seems to be becoming a common occurance to see any type of foreign power on CSX in New Jersey."Half awake half a world away

RE: UP Locos in New Jersey?

One of the CSX container trains through Syracuse today was totally foriegn power, with 2 UP's and a BNSF ex-BN SD 40. No CSX engines in the line up, however it did meet a 10 unit CSX piggyback train going westbound, no doubt a power move at the same time.Chris Bogley
