RE: Oops...again

It's also called purging the stupid people from the EarthI drive a school bus and the general rule for me is if I can see it within eyesight and it's close I will not go. If's it's moving and stops and the engineer can see me he will give me a signal to move, usually headlights shut off or toots on the horn, or a hand signal. If it's right in front of me I will not go. if it's stopped at the rad crossing and the engine is before it I will not go. The kids do not like it, but I tell them what would you want, to be killed by 215 000lbs or more of metal or to live life?Dr. SatanI'm otherwise known as the SatanTrain

That's like Darwin said...But how come the flames? Too fast on the throttle lever? Does it happen often or only on older engines?Cheers!SebastianFeel free to IM me on: sstyrnol@hotmail.com

I think that first picture is staged. I don't think either the train or the truck are moving. There doesn't appear to be a driver in the truck. The flaming locomotives are great. I know there have been many discussions on the topic but I don't recall what causes it. I'd sure like a chance to see one of those first hand.Cal Rasmussen

I'm pretty sure the flaming loco's are mostly a GE thing. Its from advancing the throttle into 8th from DB too quickly, something builds up in the exhaust manifold and once the throttle is advanced, superheated exhaust passes through and ignites the dormant fuel in the manifold, creating a flare of flames and smoke for all of 2 or 3 seconds. Usually not too dangerous but a thrill to see indeed.EDIT: A point to prove my theory, as you can see in the first pic, the locomotive is a GE unit, also just finished on a downward grade, most likely where it was in full DB, its at the bottom in the pic, the engineer probably advanced the throttle extra quickly to get the train jolting off the grade, igniting the fuel in the manifold, flare up, smoke.Oops… again – image 4~The only way to ship~

>Its from advancing the throttle into 8th from DB too quicklyNow just how can you do that BNSF4723? And why would you do that?>the engineer probably advanced the throttle extra quickly to get the train jolting off the gradeNow if he did that he would probably jolt a drawbar or break a knuckle. Now realistically you're half right. Excessive smoke happens sometimes when the Engineer advances the throttle to a high notch setting quickly, like going from Run 1 quickly to Run 8 but only an Engineer with just light engines would do something like that. If he was to do that with a train he would be asking for trouble. The flame is a different problem, yes related to GE engines. I myself do not know the exact answer as I am an Engineer not a mechanic but I do remember when the Southern Pacific C44-9W's (8100 - 8200) were new, they would occasionally emit a flame when "slowly" advancing the throttle and it was due to a problem with the locomotives dumping unburned fuel directly into the exhaust stroke. So BNSF4723 you're very close in your explanation but your train handling skills are subject to creating one very angry Conductor! As for the picture, it looks a little too close for both to be moving. I would have to agree that the train is probably stopped or maybe just starting to move at a very low speed.PatchCrew

I don't know if it's staged, but I certainly don't think it's a "close call." More likely that the train is stopped short of the crossing, probably in a meet, in order to keep from stopping on the crossing and blocking it for an extended period of time. I've got a half-dozen shots like this myself where a train was sitting half in, half out of a siding and just short of a crossing waiting on another train before pulling up and blocking the crossing. Usually the conductor or engineer is waving cars through from the window and sometimes is actually outside the loco waving folks through. EDIT: Click on "More by this photographer" and you'll see more pics from the same general area. Looks like this area is near a yard, or a grain tower, which might also explain a stopped train near a crossing rather than a "close call." MSTS happily uninstalled since June, 2003

RE: Oops...again

What's causing the flame is probably a blown turbocharger or it's on its last leg.
