As you are probably all aware, both CN and CP use Nathan/Airchime K3 horns on pretty much all of their locos today. As a result, it can get pretty mundane (in my opinion), hearing the same horn over and over and over again.. However, I have found (so far) 2 exceptions! (other than M3H's)A K5H on CP AC4400 #8500 (see the pic here: http://www.homepages.hetnet.nl/~cprail2/CP%208500.htm and notice it has 5 bells instead of 3.. I heard it as a K5 chord when it passed station name sign Yale on the CP Cascade Sub)A new cast, discordant P5 on a CN unit with CN-NA(?) logo, #5**3 (dark at the time) (heard it when it past New Westminster, BC on CN/BNSF track)This is very odd as I was under the impression that CP and CN were very picky on only having K3's..Be sure to spot and record these locos when they pass by your town as these horns are very rare on CP/CN units!cdntrains "Railroading from SEA to SKY"
Listen to a MAC9043 horn, it is different too... ThanksChris Wilson MP 63 CP's Heron Bay Sub Marathon, Ontariowww.greatnorthrails.com EMAIL: chris9102@shaw.ca
The P-5 could have perhaps been on an Ex-Illinois Central Loco as a majority of them had P-5's. However I havent heard of an IC unit in the 5000 series so Im not sure. Just my two cents worth
I have seen cases where CN/CP locos have had different horns. I saw a CN SD70I with a P5. Sounded nice to. Caught a CP AC4400 with a K3LA. Pretty loud with a nice tune. Caught a CP SD40-2 Canadian style with a K3LA, soft and melodous. Saw a CP AC4400 with an S3L, ya kinda weird, didn't hear it, but I saw it. You just gotta have that mix in there.Later John Means KLW Sound and Activity Designer LONG LIVE THE F40C!
