I might be making a trip to Ft. Devens Ma. this weekend with the wife, and was wondering if anyone in that area...or the state, can tell me some good spots to watch trains? I know about Palmer, Ma., which is 64 miles away, but what about some other spots?Chris Bogley tailsnrails@hotmail.com Syracuse New York www.tailsnrails.com
If you can get into Boston, the MBTA Mass. Ave. stop on the Orange Line has a footbridge right outside it, on the south side. Besides Orange Line trains, you can also see the MBTA Commuter Rail and Amtrak trains (including the Acela) go by.
the same line that goes though palmer runs straight to boston. all you need to do is find it and wait. Hint: its north of the fort I believe.

Since you're in the Devens area, stop by the Ayer commuter rail station. You'll see some MBTA action plus the station is at the end of the Guilford yard. You can't get much access to the yard itself but you'll likely see stuff going in and out and Guilford through trains also go along the main line there. My favorite local (to me) spot is downtown Framingham, at the junction of routes 135 and 126. This is the same CSX mainline that goes from Boston to Albany as well as a busy MBTA line and Amtrak goes through once or twice a day too. Plus, there are three yards (two of which have very easy access) so there's a fair amount of switching to watch.
Worcester yard maybe... On a good day you might see ~10 trains. CSX runs there, and you can visit the restored station there which serves as a stop for MBTA trains. I remember Amtrak's Lake Shore Limited going by also, usually in the evening. Oh yeah, Providence and Worcester RR may send a train though there occaisionally, and they have a yard a couple miles away. As JulieADriver said before the best spots are in Boston you can watch Amtrak/ MBTA commuter trains. If you go down staris from south station you can catch the red line. If you wanna do even more there is the orange line the blue line and the green line and if you take that make sure you look for the New Breda Type 8 trolley.
