Dec-07-01, 02:56 AM (EST) 2. "RE: Coming soon" Methinks its the one with the runaway CN ore train up in Canada. The guys would "bottle the air" on long cuts of cars at this mine and shove them around using only independant brakes to stop thus saving time as opposed to waiting around for the trainline to pump off. Well in this case the engineer grabbed a cut of loaded hoppers and dragged them out onto the main, then he made a full-service independant application and she just kept on a-goin'. The engineer rode her out all the way until the train finally derailed on a curve and flopped over on her side. Don Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-07-01, 03:29 AM (EST) 3. "RE: Coming soon" When I was a conductor, I HATED "bottling" the train. My engineer use to make a 15 pound reduction, and have me bottle it so the brakes would still be charged when we returned. I know it saved time, especially in the winter, but I was always scared the train would "get a mind of its own" and go away!!!(sigh) I miss the rails!!Kelley Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

"RE: Coming soon" LAST EDITED ON Dec-07-01 AT 03:37 AM (EST)When I worked for the NS the yard foreman bottled the air on me and didn't say anything. As I turned to go line a switch, something told me to look back at the cars. They were on a roll downhill toward a split rail.I had to run a good 40 yard before I was able to catch up and open the angle cock to shoot the air.Piedmont Division
