Dec-02-01, 02:03 PM (EST) "Im new here.." I just bought the game yesterday(early x-mas gift from my wife)Ive been eyeing this game for awhile.See I grew up around trains. My dad worked for C&NW in eastern Iowa until UP bought it and he now works for the UP in Chicago. My grandpa and his 2 younger brothers retired from C&NW before the buyout.
My dad worked derailments mid 70's to mid 80's I have many memories of those wreckers he worked on. I was about 8 years old when my dads friend let me run the controls of the switch engine in Marshalltown Iowa.Im 25 now and Im trying like hell to get on the railroad the have new rules where family cant get hired in with family.I played for about a hour last night. Then I got to downloading.
There are some talented people here on this board.
The only regrets I have about this game is that I didnt get it sooner...
To tell you the truth I thought it was another rrtc.Last I would like to thank all who put up the great C&NW engines, rolling stock,And cabooses I have to change the consist around.

Dec-02-01, 04:39 PM (EST) 3. "RE: Im new here.." G'day Eric,Also Welcome to the forum.Well your a person after my own heart. I know how you feel...
I'm a second generation railwayman now 60 and retired from the real train handling, but still on the job but now enjoying playing with computer trains. MSTS. Dockets (infringements) are easier to answer if I stuff up. I was very struck by your bit about:-
> "I was about 8 years old when my dads friend let me run the controls of the switch engine"
Over the years when I was in the job, I let dozens like you and older and very much older do just that, not just shunt (switch) engines either and the excitement in their eyes and the pleasure they showed was incrediable. I know those good memories will have are stuck with them too.Of course sad to say these days the rules are much more stringent and trains much bigger etc, this is unlikely to happen to a non railway person. But I bet it still does. at odd times. Where there is a will, there will be a way.
My point here is, it just gladens my heart you REMEMBERED that big day and it will stay with you all your life. In fact it seems to be the one of the reasons you want to get into the Railways (er Railroad) sorry I'm from down under.STICK with it Eric IF you REALLY WANT to get onto a Railway, you will FIND a way to acheive it. Don't be afraid to try other Railroads that do not have family members. I possibly can see their point on this, but really rather stupid, but sign of the times. All that is needed on your part is the will to WANT to do it.
I loved everyday in the Railways (all hands on) as being 2nd generation railwayman. As a youngster my Dad was a Station Master and we lived on the Station premises wherever we shifted to. I loved watching the trains and I too got lots of chances on the trains themselves, so that was for me, and looking back. LOVED IT and I sort of miss it, in as much times HAVE changed now. Railways of late, are NOT what railways use to be.
So go for it and all the very best to you. IF you do get a Railway job, drop me a line here I'll see it somewhere along the rail track providing my fireman, er I mean Conductor is looking out and not snoozed off. Happy simming.

I was given a tour of the whole loco, engine-room and all. It's because of that kind gesture by some railwaymen, that I am now a Driver myself.I think there are probably a lot of staff on the worlds railways that caught the bug in a simular way. Dec-03-01, 06:18 PM (EST) 6. "RE: Im new here.." G'day Pete,Thanks for that small ditty, loved it and again that makes my day when I see or hear about this sort of thing. Probably I'm a bit of a Railway romantic in my old(er) now retired age.Yes here Down Under and according to my railway Cobber in New Zealand it was easy to get tours and drives up front and Yes, I see you now appeciate the feeling it gave you to see the delighted looks on their faces. Certainly makes your day doesn't it and yes it's worth being told off by the boss, IF you get caught doing it, (travelling between stations that is) but usually the boss would give you a wink as he walks away. Well my bosses were like that. WE were all young once, we tend to forget that as we get up in years. When you get old(er) your memories are all you have really. So make those nice memories NOW.....Hey Pete, don't forget those younger old(er) ones too, the look on their faces is just a fantastic, especially when you allow them to ride up front between stations. Just for them to sit in the Fireman's seat is great in itself. They cannot stop thanking you enough afterwards. That has to make you feel great. Here we go with a little story you may like to hear about, hope not too boring.
I have an email friend of 4 years in Japan writes perfect english who literally love trains. He is 65 now and travels somewhere in the world twice a year and always travels on trains where he possibly can.
He was saying to me he would just love to ride up front of a passenger train. So I said to him as he was heading off to Eastern Canada some 12 months ago. Take my advice and head up to the engine and attract the attention of the crew and show your really rapt with trains and would it be possible at all for you to be up front for a bit. I would be very surprise if they would not let you, as most Railwaymen everywhere are basically the same. Of course there are the grumpy bums and party poopers with chips on their shouders as in all things. Well it worked, he got to travel nearly for the whole trip up front snapping off pictures and he hasn't stopped talkng about it ever since and the pictures he took which he sends to me after every trip. I was just as excited as he was, for I know how he felt. Made my day as well. So you got to give to get.See what I mean, do not forgo the old(er) ones either, we are all kids at heart.John

>> In the UK since privatisation, and a few unfortunate accidents , our bosses are much more strict with unauthorized people in a cab. I have done it, but risk more than a small temming off if I am caught.
********I certainly understand your point. Of course there IS a TIME and PLACE as you would well know. But I also fully understand too that since my days of railways it was all Government run, we had a lot more latitude, and it was not privatised like is now.
AND the most important thing back then was when people came on board they KNEW it was basically at their risk and would readily accept that. But sadly in today's age, if someone trips over the footplate, they have already figured out how much they are going to sue and are allowed to sue the business before they hit the floor. No responsibilty is accepted on their part. So it is quite understandable in today's age, ONE must be very cautious doing this. But as I said where there is a will, there is a WAY.********
>> Unfortunatly a lot of my collegues aren't as sympathetic to the older kids.
********That's why I added the bit:- "Of course there are the grumpy bums and party poopers with chips on their shouders as in all things."
You know these er, so and so's will go on living a miserable life. WAIT till they are retired and got time to think or refect back about their life on this earth. (The 1000's of should be pleasant memories) Since I've been retired out of the job we have a railway reunion every 6 months and I find those who were arseholes (sorry I call a spade a spade) are still miserable old(er) turds as they were miserable when in the job, or thought they were literally above everyone else. I use to and still wonder WHY they ever got into the Railways in the first place.
Perhaps with the old(er) ones they do not like looking at their future. little realising it is a fantasic time with lots of memories. On this TS forum I quite often see little things said here and I am flooded with heaps of memories that I can easily relate to whether old or of late. This is certainly no refection on you Peter, as I can see your heart's in the right place. Hope you have a long and enjoyable railway career as I did. Thanks for the little chat. First person I struck from UK. Great.John.

Dec-14-01, 01:52 AM (EST) 14. "RE: Im new here.." This is aimed at John and Pete: I just want to say Thanks! Now I'm not one o' the nippers you guys have hosted on the footplates. Heck, I'm from Oregon. But, I was treated to the same hospitality that you gave, by old-timers on the Southern Pacific back in the sixties. They knew the excitement that kids felt around trains, and I think it made them feel good to do it. I just wanted to take this oppurtunity, on behalf of all who get the "tour", to say "Thank You".Happy Holidays!Tim Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-14-01, 04:39 AM (EST) 16. "RE: Im new here.." G'day Tim,So you were one of them nippers, so you would relate to what it felt like. Thanks kindly for those nice words. > They knew the excitement that kids felt around trains, and I think it made them feel good to do it." "Feel good" WOW it certainly DID, and was repayed treble just by the look in their eyes. It's priceless.
When one sees a note like yours, well now I'm the little 60 year old nipper who is now quite wide eyed and just stepped onto the footplate. Your note did give me a warm glow, never expected anything like that. And yes the Sixties was a FANTASTIC era, an era gone by, now only memories to some. All the best to you Tim,

Dec-06-01, 08:35 PM (EST) 11. "RE: Im new here.." LAST EDITED ON Dec-06-01 AT 08:37 PM (EST)Thanks for the welcome. Finally heres a game that I can relate to.
A mature setting with a vast wealth of knowledge.I hope I can learn and someday assist other people.
I've made a couple activities with very little problems.Ive also dabbled with the route editor and I got somewhat frustrated. Its a bad feeling after 2 hours worth of work trying to lay down some track and buildings only to have the editor close down cause of a error. But I guess its like I read-trial and error....Again thanks for the knowledge and great skills you guys put on these forums.

Dec-07-01, 03:38 AM (EST) 12. "RE: Im new here.." A note about the Route Editor...it eats RAM. I have 256MB and I can only run it for about 20-30 minutes before it crashes! The secret is to SAVE OFTEN, then close the Route Editor and start fresh. I use a utility called Cacheman to moniter my available RAM. When you use it, you can see how much RAM is available by looking at your System tray. On my system, if it gets much below 100, its time to save and start again.
