I thought this was really interesting. I've never seen this on a locomotive before. I thought you only seen windscreens like these on naval vessels - or is this something different? And check the grid on the windshield.http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=34647Larry Steiner

I am not sure, but they appear to be ex-SP units. The round things were de-icers, as were the grills, for use over Donner.Kevin Arceneaux DEFAULT IS FOR DUMMIES Cry havoc and Let slip the dogs of war. Lone Wolf Activities Forum and Activity Packs are on www.3DTrains.com

Kev I think you may be right and since they appear to be coupled to some sort of snow fighting equpment, could it be that while UP is clearing a lot of older power of it's predecessor roads they repainted some former SP units exclusively for snow fighting duties on Donner as well as the rest of SP's heavy snow areas?Gary S

edited for spelling - perhaps I caught most of the errors If I remember correctly, those "round things" are called "Kent Screens". They rotate at fairly high speed, so that any water landing on them is thrown off immediately, thereby maintaining a clear view when the screens would othewise be obscured. They have one advantage over windshield wipers - they don't get obscured between passes of the wiper blades, which would be significant in places where the rain or mist is extremely heavy. As somewhat off-topic point of interest, I had a somewhat similar visor for my motor-cycle helmet back in the sixties. Made of clear plastic, with a slightly dished shape and molded-in vanes round the perimeter to catch the airflow. As soon as I was moving at any significant speed (only slightly faster than walking speed) the air-flow over the visor would spin it up fast enough to through off the water and keep a clear view.CheersJohn

Those are really nice looking locomotives. The donnor group must have some clout. A great movie to get is Battle for Donnor Pass put out by Pentrex. It shows all the hardwork the crews go to to keep the summit open. The grates over the windows help protect the crews from falling icicles too.Nick
