Hi everybody:I'm building part of the old Southern Railway route through NE Georgia into South Carolina. Can anyone tell me why the yard at Toccoa, GA is so big? It seems to have more storage and sorting capacity than even Gainesville, GA or Seneca, SC - both fairly close. The branch track from Toccoa to Elberton is now gone.I know there used to be a Toccoa Turn out of Atlanta. What was up in that neck of the woods to require the yard? Was it just a bunch of small spurs for that branch line? Sure would help me plan activities if I knew. Thanks to anybody who can help!Mark A Southern Railway Fan The NE Georgia/SC RouteNow part of Norfolk Southern's Piedmont Division
There are at least 3 people here who could do research at NS as part of their job.Warning: My Guessing Engine is kicking into Run 8...Ok, so my wacked out common sense tells me a few things about this question:1) NS works with what they have. Why buy more land in Gainesville if you already have a bunch in Toccoa.2) It might have to do with the Hartwell Railroad interhcange. In Elizabeth, Ga (aka North Marietta) CSX has a reasonable size yard for interchange with Georgia Northeastern.Pete Willard
