They both run on the "Piedmont", Amtrak trains 73 and 74 operating between Raleigh, NC and Charlotte, NC. Amtrak 73 is the morning train and currently is using 1797. 74 is the afternoon train and is currently using 1755.1755 has a replacement hood door on the conductor's side, and is missing the "O" in North Carolina.

>Nosed PHI In real life yet The Amtrak units look like crap because they have a lot of silver paint. And most have already been touched up -- poorly -- since they went into service five years ago. Silver paint NEVER holds up on anything. The Metrolink units always have filthy noses because the wash rack at Taylor Yard does NOT have moveable brushes like in an automobile car wash. The brushes only hit the sides of the equipment. You can also see they didn't buy the right wash rack as the top of the brushes does NOT hit the top of the sides of the Bombardier cars either!!! There's always 3-4" of filth up there on clean car sides. What they need to do is hire a few guys and give 'em long-handled brushes and soap up the loco/car ends manually, and let the wash rack rinse it all off. But...as a Western Pacific locomotive shop foreman once told me, Dirty locomotives pull just as good as clean ones!" I think he went on to take charge of Southern Pacific's, and now Union Pacific's housekeeping departments....

Its my understanding that the NCDOT's equipment is mostly if not all ex-MILW. They even have one of their Full length dones. As Jake already said, its all State owned They used to have a baggage car and Attendents in the lounge car, but that went a while back Amtrak F59's anywhere but the West Coast – image 19Amtrak F59's anywhere but the West Coast – image 20

Well once upon a time we had a couple leased from Sounder here on the VRE! But the F59s are parked in Ivy yard out of hours and in need of a major brake inspection. VRE is not going to pay for that as the time period of the lease is up in February and the unofficial judgement here according to rumor was that they are hanger queens compared to the RP39s and 40s and the F40s. VRE is looking for new power and they expect to generate an RFP for about 18 new engines by the end of the year. Rumor has it that MPI is interested in bidding and GE is talking to them about P4xAC (Geneis-Evos) and the dark horse in the race is Amtrak which has surplus P40s from the former express service available for long term lease and they are upgraded to P42 specs and less than 10 years old. VRE currently is evaluating a borrowed Amtrak P40 on the Fredericksburg line.... This is because of the phenominal growth of VRE which is projected to double, again, in less than 2 years. Currently they are at 15k passengers a day and project 30k passengers/day by 2006. Their plans call for 8 car all double decker trains by then and because of HEP load alone, never mind acceleration from stops, they will have to double head the RP39s/40s and buy more power, hence the RFP. Currently they are in the process of refurbing some 40 Metra Pullman Standard Gallery cars and placing them in service as a stopgap until they can buy new cars. The inside track for new cars is a dog fight between Bombardier, which they have evaluated as part of the Sounder sets, and Kawasaki which they have approx. 10 of that they bought 2 years ago. BTW, even after refurb the gallery cars are considered junk by the passengers and referred to as cattle cars and VRE is in the process of moving them to the Manassas line (NS- I forget the Sub name at the moment) where the average MAS is about 60 compared to the Fredericksburg line (CSX-Richmond, old RF&P) where they get up to 80... Seems the Fredericksburg passengers in the top of the Gallery were/are getting motion sick at high speed and there have been several "unfortunate incidents" or at least unfortunate for those on the lower levels....
