Just got back from Las Vegas, and while on a day trip to Hoover Dam, we drove throught Boulder City and I thought I saw an excursion train. I think it said Nevada Southern Railway. While in boulder we stopped for lunch at the Jack in the Box and accross the street about 1/2 mile away looked like a bunch of passenger cars, including one in UP yellow. Did not get a chance to investigate more. Can anyone tell me about this railway? Do they have a website? Any info at all would be appreciated/ -- John Tackett --
What you saw is the Railroad Museum of Nevada. Most of the equipment is fenced into a lot on the north side of Highway 95.Union Pacific did have a branch running off the mainline in Las vegas until about 10 or so years ago -- it connected with the mainline south and west of McCarran Airport.Between Boulder City and Henderson, you might have noticed a "Railroad Pass Casino". It was just north of there that the UP Boulder City branch crossed Highway 95 at grade. The Boulder City branch existed mainly to carry materials to the Boulder Dam site in the 1930's. The UP went almost to the dam site, but because of the steep grades into the canyon, a narrow guage railway with switchbacks, etc., was built for the final few miles. Some of the original equipment for this can be seen across the highway from the Gold Strike Casino (at least it was there about 10-12 years ago, last time I was at the Gold Strike -- made $1,200.00 on five quarters, and left immediately!!)
They have the UP 844 there. Its a GP30 and the second 844 (this is the reason why the 844 turned into the 8444). I breifly look at the rolling stock there but didn't stay long.I couldn't find any websites about it.SorryNick
You asked a question I had wondered myself after spotting the old UP cars while I was sitting in the McDonalds drive thru across the street. Now I know.Chris Bogley chrisb@tailsnrails.com Syracuse New York www.tailsnrails.com
