RE: OT: Digital Cameras

Just a thought, more to do with your title than your request...this is listed as a General Forum; ergo, how can anything be "Off Topic?" General means "Any."
In the price vs. quality trade-off, I am quite happy with my Concord Eye-Q 2000 digital. It's a 2Mpixel unit, so doesn't do great closeups or macros, but for general quality of photos, its fine. And, it's reasonably priced. My only complaint is that the viewing screen washes out in bright light, so you have to use the optical viewfinder and hope for the best.

I own a Canon 10D. I LOVE THE THING!! I have a kodak 3.1m camera too but the optics aren't that great. If money is tight I would recommend Nikon's line of small cameras. They have incredible optics. Definetaly get a 3.0+ megapixel camera. A Coolpix 3100 is a great camera to start with. Its $257 at newegg.com Nick

One thing about SONY is the frikin memory sticks. Memory sticks only work with other sony stuff. Just about every other brand out there uses compact flashes. When I upgraded from the Kodak to the Canon I could use the same memory. Just a thought. (Don't get me wrong, I love SONY electronics and own several SONY things)Nick

One of the Sonys I have is the Mavica MVC-FD100. It's only a 1.2 Meg (so it really can't enlarge much past a 4"x6" print), but besides the sony stick it also saves to a 3.5" floppy - any computer except a G3 Mac or better can read and write to them. My other Sony is a MVC-FD73, which only saves to floppies and is only a VGA (640X480) camera, but it has a 10X optical lens which gets me in nice and close. If I'm stuck without my camera, I also carry a Palm Zire71 organizer, which has a built in 640X480 camera - again, basic snapshot quality, but way better than nothing..........

LAST EDITED ON Oct-09-03 AT 01:21 PM (EDT)

I purchased a Minolta Dimage S414 digital camera about two months ago and am mastering its intricasies. It is 4.1 megapixel. It takes excellent pictures but I find the LCD screen difficult to work with. I am accustomed to shooting with high quality SLR equipment. My "big" camera bag contains a Nikon F100 and a wide array of lenses, filters, electronic flash, etc. Consequently, the digital is a step down from what I am used to. However, it is great for railfanning, shooting pictures for use in MSTS modeling and shooting pictures of my Sheltie puppy. It is compact enough that I carry it everywhere. My Nikon F100 with a Sigma 28-70mm zoom lens and Nikon SB-26 flash weighs about three pounds. The digital weighs less than a pound. In order to get the advantages of digital such as instant viewing of images, no scanning required for computer viewing, no waiting to finish off a roll of film to get it processed, and the SLR features I miss such as through the lens viewing, interchangable lenses, etc., I will probably be trading my Nikon F100 film body for a Nikon D100 digital body. It is 6 megapixel and will give me the best of both worlds. I will also work with all the equipment I already have.Enough of dreaming. Determine what your photographic needs are and purchase a camera accordingly. I would not go for anything less than 4 megapixel if you want 8x10 prints. Good luck my friend.Cal Rasmussen

Thanks, Cal!
I was looking at Nikons, actually. I use those Sony Mavicas at school, and they are pretty nice, but I think I shall go with a Nikon.
