Just returned from vacation in Colorado. While there we visited the Royal Gorge and I rode in the cab of the CRRX (Canyon Rail Road), The Royal Gorge Route, F-7 #402. Here are some pics: The Royal Gorge Route station at Canon City, Colorado. (Former ATSF station. The former D&RGW station is now a bank.) F-7 #402 former CNW #4075 Cab controls. Major rebuild from original controls. Controls to left of engineer. Approaching Station. Entering the Royal Gorge canyon. Suspended RR bridge at center of Gorge. Taken out cab door looking at passenger cars. (Former VIA cars.)FYI the CRRX owns the track from Canon City to Parkdale Siding. This is on the UP, former D&RGW, route from Glennwood Springs over Tennessee Pass through the Royal Gorge to Pueblo. CRRX is controlled from UP, Omaha. UP has rights to use the track should it reopen the Tenn Pass route, but the CRRX would have priority for its trains.
Some railfans get all the luck! Yes, I grabbed a brochure of the Royal Gorge from a gas station while on a road trip to Yellowstone, and from the fares I saw, you must have paid a big sum of money to climb into that cab? That F7 unit is painted in Rio Grande colors, so did the Royal Gorge belong to D&RGW?
Carry babies and strollers on stairs. It's good for your biceps. MTAGoing your way-the safe way
Yes, it did cost a few bucks, BUT it was far more fun than a seat in one of the coaches or standingup in one of the open air coaches.>That F7 unit is painted in Rio Grande colors, Not exactly. The scheme is the same as the D&RGW wide stripe, but the base color is Orange instead of yellow.> so did the Royal Gorge belong to D&RGW? Not the Gorge, but the trackage through the Gorge.
I saw the ad for cab rides in this beautiful locomotive on the Royal Gorge Railroad website, and when (if) I ever get out to that area, I am certainly going to follow in your footsteps, and take a cab ride...it looks really awesome. Does anyone know some other railroads out there that have cab rides (in F-units or otherwise, but diesel only please). I'd love to have at least some idea of what is out there...Tim Herman
