Need Help! WinXP Keeps Restarting!

Just last week I updated from Windows ME to Windows XP Home Edition. Everything went OK, I didn't loose any files or anything. But every once in a while I will get an error message saying something like error in NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM the Remote Procedure Call terminated unexpectily. Then it will give me a 60 second count down before it restarts. Has ahyone else had this, and if so what did you do to fix it. Thanks for the help.

I would check for any viruses first, then make sure you have installed updated drivers for your MOBO's controller chips, i.e., Intel, VIA, SiS, AMD, ALi, graphics adapter, sound, etc.Download and install the SP1 and pre-SP2 updates from Microsoft's Update website.W. Sieffert

I would generally agree with the advice given so far.1) Check for viruses with a current virus definitions set.2) If step 1 doesn't turn up anything, how often does the problem occur? The next step would be to check your installation of Windows XP. When you upgraded from Windows ME to Windows XP how did you perform the upgrade? In other words did you upgrade your OS over the top of Windows ME or did you perform a clean installation of Windows XP, which involves re-formatting your hard disk and installing the new OS to a clean disk. Depending on the answers will dictate the next steps.

I put XP over ME, I didn't do the compelete installation, I just did the up grade. It does sound like the virus. My Norton has been down and I don't know how to get it back up. I don't have auto protect or e-mail scanning right now. I can worry about Norton latter but Sniper can you help me get rid of the virus first. Here it comes againg. See ya . . .

Once everything is stable again I would address the installation of Windows XP, anything less than a clean install of Windows XP creates stability problems of it's own.

It is definitely the blaster worm. To stop it shutting down your system, get the xp firewall going. Then go to Windows update, and download all critical updates. Once they are installed, go to Norton and get the lastest updates, plus the blaster worm deletion file.David

I thought the procedure was to get rid of the infection first,then go to the Msoft update site to get the patch to prevent reinfection,as I was under the impression that whilst infected,the worm would try to prevent you accessing the Msoft site to get the cure.The moral is that if the Msoft patches had been originally installed,when first being made available,no infection would have happened.

- UP Wings,Last week I reinstalled my WinXP, and I was just about 2 minutes on the net for downloading the update, and guess what: I had the virus. To get rid of it follow this procedure:

Download the file "fixblast.exe" from http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/FixBlast.exe !
Download the patch from Microsoft http://download.microsoft.com/download/c/d/d/cdd7ac92-e4cc-4b1e-bc2f-7a61b46b23bf/WindowsXP-KB824146-x86-ENU.exe !
Make sure, you have the latest anti-virus software!
Shut down your internet connection!
Reboot your computer!
Run "fixblast.exe"!
Apply the patch!
Reboot!
Check your PC with your anti-virus software!
DONE

Thanks sstyrnol, I will do that tonight (I am at school right now). I don't think my system is unstable, it might be in the future but I don't want to do a new installation of WinXP. I did the up-date without loosing a file so I don't want to risk it again. I will see how the up-date does and take it from there. Thanks again.

I have downloaded all what you said and am going to run it but I have have one more question: how do I get my autoprotect back from Norton. Will it automatically come back or will I have to download something? Also how do I get that firewall for Windows? Thanks for the help.

Thanks for all your help Sebastian. I think I am now virus free. The last thing I need to do is get Norton back up. It says that it is missing a file so I was going to reinstall it. But I can't find it on none of my back-up CDs (Norton came with the computer). I will try to look again tonight. Thanks again.

If you haven't kept the trialware of Norton's current by the purchase of a subscription, now would be a good time to purchase their Internet Security package. It contains the antivirus program and the firewall program which is far better then the XP firewall plus a year of updates.The Norton's firewall is still blocking attempts to access my computer from remote systems on the Internet which is how Blaster and its copycats are spread.SRV Ron

I finally got everything back last night. It took a few risky trips on the internet to Norton's website but I made it. And the full system scan shows no viruses. I have the Anti Virus until May but I think I still will look into the firewall program. I couldn't get the firewall from windows XP for some reason. Thanks for all the help.

I can't keep the XP firewall On because it blocks my file sharing in ethernet. But I have Zonealarm and hardware firewall (+NAT).If you connect your machine to the net without any firewalls, you will get the worm. It took about 30 seconds with an ISDN line...
