Merging the Lehigh Valley – image 1

Assume for a second that the Lehigh Valley Railroad was going to be merged into one of the East's "Big Three" (N&W, PC, or CS) in the mid-1970s (i.e. before Conrail and 'rationalization' of the physical plant) and the only criteria is "Who's the best fit?"Some other things:
-Assume that whoever takes the LV can fix whatever damage was done by Hurricane Diane in 1956, if it hadn't already been completely repaired. Additionally, "the money's there" to perform needed MOW etc.-It may be that the LV simply doesn't fit into anybody's railway well; if so, that's an acceptable answer as well. If possible, I'd appreciate anyone's comments on the answer and why you gave the answer you did. Thanks!

Yes, it was. I've discovered this today while poking about in the backwoods of the Internet for information. Question, though: If the PRR owned the LV, why was it not folded into the Penn Central in 1968? (The only reason I can think of, other than some political or regulatory matter that Stuart Saunders would have foreseen) is that Philadelphia considered the LV to be unsalvageable. Maybe I should have said, "You're a Federal regulator with the authority to decide who of the Big Three gets the Lehigh Valley. Make your choice." Either way, it's my understanding based upon some reading that most of the LV is long gone. Is that correct?

Becasue while they owned it they left it alone for the most part. It had nothing to do with that, they were trying to leave some crumbs on the table for the ICC, competitive wise.Kevin Arceneaux

Ah, thank you. So you'd fold it into the Penn Central and eventually watch it be dismantled, due to redundant trackage and little on-line business?

RE: Merging the Lehigh Valley

The PRR control was to counter B&O control of the Reading. This was a fierce competition between the two. PRR had control to keep the LV oout of unfriendly hands. But even then the LV was in trouble. With the loss of antracite coal as a main source of revenue the LV was in serious trouble. PRR did not want it, they felt it would hurt the merger with NYC. From 1928 the PRR, The Pennsylvania Corp. and the Wabash (both of which PRR had controlling stock ownership) owned 44% of the LV stock. The ICC made PRR put the stock in a non-voting trust. With the LV falling apart in the 1950's, PRR made a bid for control in the late 50's to protect their investment. ON April 11, 1962 the ICC formally gave approval for the PRR to dissolve the non-voting trust and purchase the rest of the outstanding shares. By February 1963, PRR had control of about 90% of the shares, it had also purchased the shares held by its subsidiaries (Wabash and the Pensylvania Corp.) But due the the bad shape of the LV, the PRR did not merge it into the PRR. That is also why it was not included in the PC merger. One of the conditions of the merger was that the LV was to be offered to eother the N&W or the C&O. Niether wanted it. The N&W had control over the EL and didn't need another line from Buffalo to NYC and the C&O did not want it because of its control of the B&O, which in turn controled the CNJ and the Reading. Three days after PC went into bankruptcy the LV followed.Kevin Arceneaux
