Chat room abbreviations and shortcuts don't belong here – image 1

For those of you who frequent chat rooms and are used to using abbreviations and other shortcuts to save time and typing, that practice is not appropriate here in the forums. Please use full, correctly spelled words and punction so that others can understand what you are saying. Many of us never use chat rooms and may not be familiar with the slang used there.Cal Rasmussen

RE: Chat room abbreviations and shortcuts don't belong

Excellent points, but I do think that things like "LOL" or "LMAO" etc should be ok.And everyone should know what d/l means.
But even I have a hard time with the people who spell like this:"Hay Waz^? How's Skewl?" And it looks riduculous..and it makes you want to do the abbreviations at school in the middle of an English test..which is not good! Always practice good grammer! Its taught for a reason!

RE: Chat room abbreviations and shortcuts don't belong

LAST EDITED ON Oct-03-03 AT 00:15 AM (EDT)

My Two Cents:
The only problem with using the chat-room abbreviations is, are you sure your reader knows what you intended?A long, long time ago, in a life far,far away, LOL was Little Old Lady, (NOT from Pasadena!) a derogatory reference among my peers to someone's driving ability.
Then it became Lots Of Luck! (in yet another life)
Now, of course, it's Laughing Out Loud.
ADDED: Think I'm kidding? Go to http://www.ucc.ie/cgi-bin/uncgi/acronym and watch what happens when you enter LOLNO, I'm not channelling, but I've been around for more than a few years, and, tongue-in-cheek, I consider various phases of my life as different lives, because they've been so radically different from one another. I have drifted from the original thread line here, but it gives you an idea of what someone can be up against. In my opinion, any sort of 'shorthand' in a typed message is laziness, not time-saving. The only exceptions to this are '10 Codes,'when used by Law Enforcement to convey a lot of information is a short time, and the 'Q Codes' used by telegraphers to save time in morse code transmissions. Both have long-since been standardized, so there is no doubt as to meaning or intent.(The foregoing is the opinion of the author, and should not be construed to be the position of management)

Say what now? Please, people, this is EXACTLY why we really should have some rules on punctuation... Recently, I've been unable to fully understand 1/4 of all the posts that I read here.Come on, people, please take the time to punctuate your sentences. It makes everything so much easier, and makes you look MUCH less of an a**.-You can never have too much inner beauty. Or socks.

Seems very self correcting to me. People will either manage to figure out how to communicate in this enviornment or they will be ignored. We can already see from this thread that several people want various exceptions to whatever "rule" might be adopted.>Come on, people, please take the time to punctuate your

RE: Chat room abbreviations and shortcuts don't belong

Actually, there ARE rules for punctuation; the same can be said for spelling and grammar. Apparently, English Teachers and Professors don't bother to teach them anymore, (Typing Teachers don't either) and anyone that uses them is denigrated.
Think about this: If you don't know the forementioned rules, that is ignorance and can be forgiven. If you have been taught them and 'just don't bother' to use them anymore, that is sloth and unforgivable.

Please don't misunderstand - I'm not going to flame someone, or worse yet, ignore them, for poor Grammar, etc., unless the problem is that I just plain can't understand what they are trying to say.
And no, I'm not going to be a Word Nazi, the problem isn't mine. Just don't expect ME to use shortcuts; it ain't that hard to type and proofread.

L337speak I can understand limiting or even outright banning. I hope you aren't referring to abreviations in common usage like LOL, IMHO, IIRC, and the like. Bear in mind that some of us actually do have lives and the few seconds (or minutes) saved in using them, being a hunt & peck typist myself, when we do take the time to post something are important in allowing us to get back to that life. And so it goes for reading other's posts too.Not that I don't enjoy my visits here but I don't want to make a career of it either.I would hope that before things go too far with the appointment of Spelling, Grammer, Syntax, and Punctuation Nazis that we can remember a very simple and effective long standing solution to any such perceived socially intolerable insults to one's delicate sensibilities. If you don't like it don't read it. It's always worked in the past.Think of it like this. If the author thought it was important he'd write it in plain properly structured english. If it can't be read and understood it can safely be ignored.IMHO

Common shortcuts(IIRC,LMAO etc) are helpful to us "search and destroy" typists out here but that said "elite speak or IM speak has no place here, particularly if said poster is actually trying to get one of us to respond to a question.Gary S

I have to play devil's advocate here.I'm not sure that this thread is appropriate.I agree that while it's shocking to see the state of some people's literacy, (I'm not talking about those to whom english is a second language) the only person stating what is or isn't appropriate on these fora, should be Nels as forum owner. Not to mention that a proper spelling and punctuation edict on forum posts is pointless. If you can't understand a post, don't answer. It's that simple. The offenders will learn quickly that if they want answers, they must post a legible composition.

>Columbia Gorge Route (Phase 1 UP side 95%, BNSF side 90%) I agree 100%. Instant messaging accronyms and abbreviations do not belong here. McDonalds taught Americans to accept mediocre or poor quality as Wonderful. Having thrived on Big Macs in college, Bill Gates gave us the mediocre, bug filled Windows operating system and people have accepted it as Wonderful. Now instant messaging is adding one more facet of laziness to the world, teaching everyone that using abbreviations for everything is OK. LOL is not in the English dictionary. LMAOROF is not there either. LOL is really a redundant accronym. Laughing can usually be heard, except by the deaf. Out loud refers to something that can be heard. So LOL is an example of a stupid accronym, since laughing, unless you are mute, is always out loud.. Let's eliminate the LOL and replace it with L... Less typing... You do not have to fumble for those extra character and Y C G O T T N L A F Y M F.... For the non-instant messanger folks, here is a translation of the above. You can go on to the next letter and finish you message faster.... Makes sense to me. Why bother with typing a word at all. Use only the first letter for everything and you can send more messages than ever.
Sorry for the rant everyone, but Cal pushed a button on a subject that I have been silently fuming about for a long time... Bill

Chat room abbreviations and shortcuts don't belong here – image 11

Gentlemen and I use the term loosely, I think it is time to wrap this up. I had no idea this discussion would go this far.First off, I have no objection to acronyms like LOL, ROTL, LMAO, etc. I finally found a website that has definitions for the ones I don't know.My objection is things like "no" for "know" or "2" for "to or too" and eliminating about half the letters in a word. If I can't read and understand a post, it frustrates the hell out of me (that'll get censored!) I would just like to see whole words used, punctuation, and capitalization so that I can understand what some of these "kids" are saying. That's all I have to say about that. In reading the other posts in this thread, it appears I'm not alone.Cal Rasmussen
