No derailment is OK. On a lot of ATSF locomotives, there is a decal saying "No accident is acceptable. All accidents are preventable." It would be intrestion if he also got the message that says "Activity ended, car derailed."

Yeah, the GHUTGAV1-30 derailed at the north switch at Norman heading southbound on the Red Rock Sub. Most likely a car picked the switch and cause everything behind it to derail. The line should be open by Thursday morning.Austin

That is SOOOOOOO sad As far as the grain.....I wouldn't want to be anywhere near that place in a few days if it's still there. The smell would be unbearable !!

They had a problem several years back in Montana with spilled grain (corn I think) that was left on the ground and fermented. Bears were getting intoxicated on the mash.Brad Meyer

Now...I'm not sure what the procedures would be in a derailment of this magnitude...but with grain trucks (You know..road trucks) food or feed companies will not take it if it has been contaiminated (or been in contact with anything alien). They cannot risk giving containminated food to any livestock, in case of deadly bacteria. Sounds like a waste...but it's for good cause.I know when the feed mill really screws up an order of grain (Putting the wrong medicine, or etc in it), the farmers will not want it, and the feed mill cannot take it back. If it's already on a truck before they figure out the screw-up..not much can be done. It is of no use. Usually, my grandpa wil take the truck and unload the feed in his field. It makes good fertilizer for the crops.
**Edit**
Upon closer inspection of the caption under the photograph, the commodity is wheat. Feed companies are not as picky when using raw crop, as it gets cleaned and shelled, etc during the cleaning process. They could probably take a bunch and salvage it, but not the stuff directly on the ground. My guess is most of th wheat could be saved.

>My guess is most of the wheat could be saved. You are most likely correct Jay. This summer a CPR potash train derailed near Kininvie, Alberta. The crew I was working on went to the derailment to repair the damage to the track. While we were there, a big vacuum unit was loading several trucks with potash from the damaged cars and from the larger piles on the ground.Although not exactly grain, I'm sure BNSF will be interested in salvage as much as possible to minimize the compensation the will most likely have to pay to the owner of the grain.*Edited for spelling*
