UP #3985 Challenger to make Nebraska run

UP 3985 will be making a run across Nebraska from Gering, NE to Omaha, NE. Called the River City Roundup Special, the train will consist of 15 passenger cars carrying elected officials, civic leaders, and UP employees. The River City Roundup is a yearly festival held in Omaha. 3985 is billed as the world's largest operating steam locomotive, at 1 million pounds, 122 feet long, 6 foot diameter drive wheels, and 'hinged' frame to assist in negotiating curves.
With my typical luck, I'm scheduled to be on the road Thursday when the 3985 arrives in the Omaha area. However it will remain on static display at a couple sites around the Omaha area through Oct. 4. Hopefully a few photo ops will present themselves. The timetable for the River City Roundup Special is:Wednesday
10:00am MDT Depart Gering, NE
10:50am 10 minute stop in Northport, NE
11:20am 10 minute stop in Broadwater, NE
12:30pm 30 minute stop in Oshkosh, NE
4:15pm CDT Ties down in North Platte, NE for the nightThursday
8:00am Depart North Platte
9:30am 10 minute stop in Lexington, NE
10:20am 30 minute stop in Kearney, NR
12:00pm 10 minute stop in Grand Island, NE
1:45pm 25 minute stop in Columbus, NE
3:20pm 10 minute stop in Fremont, NE
3:50pm 10 minute stop in Valley, NE
5:00pm Arrives in Omaha, NE3985 will initally tie down at the Durham Western Heritage Museum
near Omaha's Amtrak depot. Over the upcoming weekend 3985 will be moved to tracks near the new Omaha Civic Center, location of the River City Festival, for weekend public display. Saturday, Oct. 4, 3985 will be moved to Golden Spike Park across the river in Council Bluffs, IA for public display. No details yet on it's destination or schedule after Oct. 4.

a week from Satrurday. The only official public displays I've heard of are this coming weekend, and Saturday Oct. 4. Maybe they think they'll have her in the shop since the new civic center sits where the UP shops used to be. I got to see it at several locations as it came through Kearney. I did take some photos, but the better shots are on 35mm, and won't be available for a while. I did get to pace it at 40 mph between Kearney and Gibbon.

>> I got to see it at several locations as it came through KearneySo near yet so far! I got back into Omaha at 17:30.... 30 stinkin' minutes after 3985 arrived at the depot/museum. However, a co-worker who had a touch of the 'steam flu' took off this afternoon and managed to get a few shots near the Lane siding west of Omaha.
I'll get them from him and post them this evening if possible.

I'll try paying a visit to the public displays this weekend and get a few more photos if possible. It's hard to really tell in the one photo, but with a little imagination it sure does look like the usual Steve Lee/Lynn Nystrom crew giving the wave as they pass.

With a 35-40 mph wind blowing, and 3985 being set out right in the middle of the Civic Center construction area, dust bowl like conditions prevailed Friday afternoon.
