I get these annoying screens every couple of seconds on some websites, lately I'm getting them on train-sim.com. If I download and install the blasted thing to shut them up, it always screws up internet explorer, requiring a reinstall of internet explorer and usually running Ontrack to fix the system registry. "Always trust content" indeed, if anyone knows how to disable the blasted thing forever I would appreciate it, I'm really not interested in dancing singing icons. If I want to watch a movie I'll turn on the TV, pictures on the web don't need to be animated. Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Nov-15-01, 01:26 AM (EST) 2. "RE: Anybody know how to shut these viruses off???" Hmmm, don't understand why it would be corrupting your browser like that. I have Flash installed on both my home PC as well as the PC here at work and never had a problem (I am a fan of http://hotwired.lycos.com/animation/ as well as www.newgrounds.com and a longtime fan of animation and cartoons in genreal). Macromedia is also the makers of Shockwave and a legit company, NOT a virus. That being said, I too get tired of almost every single website having to have gobs of Java, music or some other type of animation on it that makes it take 3 hours to load. There's a time and place for everything.Don Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Nov-15-01, 02:15 PM (EST) 4. "RE: Anybody know how to shut these viruses off???" Just download and install the newest version of IE or Netscape, then go download newest version of shockwave, flash, quicktime, WindowsMediaPlayer,Realplayer, Adobe Acrobat, etc etc until you've updated all your plugins. Then the messages will stop. If the onsite warnings aren't working, then try directly from the website of the company. Delete any non-valid plugins and always "No" those ... non-valid being most things not on the above list.Bear in mind I have DSL so the concept of continuously downloading updates for software does not fill me with too much dread. In fact I'd streak Fenway Park just to get a update for MSTS or my sound card. Actually I'd probably streak it anyhow even without reward. -Andy

Nov-15-01, 07:13 PM (EST) 5. "RE: Anybody know how to shut these viruses off???" The problem is the banner ads at the top of the page. A number of banner ads these days are being circulated as Shockwave Flash files along with the old school animated gifs.Just click yes when you get the popup, it isn't going to do any harm to your pc.--

I sure hope you're being sarcastic. Macromedia Flash 5 is not going to harm your system, it is definitely not a virus. The Pop-up filters don't work on ActiveX controls like the Flash 5 installed. They will only filter pop-ups from free sites or .... ummm ... questionable sites :p Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Nov-20-01, 07:15 AM (EST) 10. "RE: Anybody know how to shut these viruses off???" LAST EDITED ON Nov-20-01 AT 07:18 AM (EST)Just to add my 0.02pThe title of this thread mentions viruses, yet none of these symptoms are from viruses, just messages that are inviting you to update your software for free.Macromedia is a well known and trusted site and flash 5.0 player is the most up to date software at the moment. Macromedia asserts that up to 95% or so of web browsers have the capability of running flash and their software automatically generates screens like this for those who have not got it (or have turned it off!). Unfortunately its not only used for cartoon like movies and annoying pop ups but menu systems and data retreval. A web site designed in flash can be far smaller and faster than html and java. A good web designer should always give you a non flash alternative but in this fast moving environment that is the internet, many do not and so effectively shut you out of their sites.I would recomend you download the latest internet explorer or netscape navigator as flash is allready a part of them, along with a lot of fixes for security problems as well. After all if you couldn't run MSTS because of problems in your graphics card you would certainly update its drivers to fix it.Anti POP-UP software will not remove the download message but it will get rid of the annoying spam.TerryCyberstorm Ldt"Lightning quick websites, Your data in a Flash!"pardon the pun Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
