Nov-11-01, 10:52 PM (EST) "Congress prepairing Amtrak's Funeral" I read in the paper that Congress has asked Amtrak to draw up plans to go out of business in 2003 if they aren't self sufficient. IN which case it looks like this may be the end of long distance passenger rail travel in the United States. I asume Amtrak will continue running passenger trains on the Northeast, Northwest, and California Corridors, Auto Train, and some regional service such as Kestone Service in PA, as the state splits the bill with them. One cool thing about if they go out of business I think there equipment will be auctioned off, and I've heard of Amtrak selling perfectly good heritage cars for $10,000. Imagine a viewliner, diner, and Amcan...err Amfleet for $30,000. I'll take that, now just need a train to pull it.
Of course there is one other possability, the freight roads could take over passenger service.. Plain and simple this nation needs Amtrak or equivalent service and with competition between the roads, passenger service could return to what it once was, in the days of the The Super Chief, The California Zephyr, The Empire Builder, The Broadway Limited, and The Cresent Limited.
The later is an off chance but it would be really cool. The E.A.S. Agrippa

Nov-14-01, 08:03 PM (EST) 2. "RE: Congress prepairing Amtrak's Funeral" Well Maybe Acela might do it. ANd doesn't Santa Fe help out Amtrak alot? They are the lead contender to do passenger service. But the goverment has to releze that they need to have passenger rail! In every country with a good passenger rail service the goverment funds them! USA listen it might not be profitable but its a need! Not everyone can fly or drive! Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

>I can't fly!!! Oh, do you mean in an airplane? Whoops. Maybe they will restore passenger service to railroads like Union Pacific, Santa Fe, and (who knows?!) maybe even Conrail! That would be nice, but it won't happen.Mike Karlik

Nov-15-01, 05:24 PM (EST) 4. "RE: Congress prepairing Amtrak's Funeral" They could restore it to the private roads, they did it in England. Unfortunately Conrail won't participate as CSX and Nazi err. Norfolk Southern sucked them up a couple years ago. But I am going to buy some undecorated Amcans, viewliners, and genesis engines and do them up in a faictional CSX passenger scheme. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
