Huge step taken to fight internet piracy – image 1

LAST EDITED ON Sep-09-03 AT 01:25 PM (EDT)

Check out an Associated Press article today
http://www.cnn.com/2003/TECH/internet/09/09/downloading.music.ap/index.html
Virtually the same article appears at http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,96796,00.htmlPerhaps this will serve as a word of warning to those who pirate things for use in MSTS (models, skins, logos, trademarks, etc, etc, etc). I doubt the "I didn't know it was illegal" defense will hold much water. EDIT: Oh, BTW, I know that the subject of these articles has been in the news recently and probably is not new to most of you and I also realize that right now this action only applies to particular music files. However, I think that this action sets a precedent and it applies (or at least WILL apply someday) to the simulation hobby as well.

Except for the paywhere vendor sin this situation.*Don't click on it, i made up an address for demonstrational purposes and I have no idea wher eit actually points to!-------------Huge step taken to fight internet piracy – image 4

In actuality, this is John, not Bob Netzlof. Thanks, sorry for the confusion.

Sorry to say that piracy has already struck and smitten MSTS. I have seen Sandpatch, Kicking Horse Pass I, Tehachapi I and II, Cambrian and all the Foreign routes like Heidi and such posted at various times in many groups on Usenet. I have sent a heads up to MLT many times. the first time I saw KHP, the uploader was from Canada.
Routes seem to be the only thing that show's up regularly along with MSTS it's self.

If they could get into China and break up the pirates that bootleg everything there, they would acomplish something. Don't expect any action to happen over there.Unfortunely, the only winners in this latest fishing expedition are going to be the leeching lawyers. They have caught a lot of the pirates already. Yet, the losers are going to be a lot of computer owners that are finding out, the hard way, that there systems were taken over by hackers to use them as file servers. That defense, of course, will not be accepted. Time for them to hire another leech, the bankrupty attorney.SRV RonFirewall still blocking attempts to access this computer every 15 minutes.

And another article...
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2003/09/09/MN81934.DTLMy favorite words of the article.
Von Lohmann said that the music industry could have gone even further by transforming illegal swappers into legal ones. If RIAA would invest their "hunting" money into a site to download music that was as good as Kazaa their file swapping problem would improve. My question is this... CD's are at $18 now. Ok, the artist gets a $1 of the sale, the CD and case couldn't be more than $2, and the store gets $2. So where does all the money go? The music industry!! And they wonder why people go underground for free music. The RIAA has really opened the door for sueing people. Now software and movie downloaders could be facing the same fate. And we will loose all our privacy so multimillion dollar companies can watch everything we do online just to boost thier bottom lines.

In addition to the crackdown on music files, I would also like to see the "serial-crack" places shut down. More then once I've seen Abacus TSM, and a couple other TS, and railroad-sim related codes floating around there when doing searches on Yahoo. I support the closure of these sites.Take care!Kurt
