At long last, it looks like the line will finally break ground next year. It will run from 125th Street in Harlem to Hannover Square in Lower Manhattan with a branch off to the 63rd Street tunnel and the Broadway Express (BMT) to Brooklyn. This line will greatly reduce crowding on the Lexington Avenue IRT (4,5,6), currently the only subway line on the East Side. Does this actually mean that the line will be operating in a few years? It most certainly does not, especially with the city's low budget. It also is not the MTA's top priority, which is extending the 7 to the Hudson Yards area on the West Side, followed by the East Side Access Project for LIRR access to Grand Central. The 2nd Avenue line is after that.

They're extending the (7)? Wow... Excuse me, John. I don't usually visit the MTA's site.

RE: Could it be? A Second Avenue Subway?

I visited the MTA web site and found out that the new South Ferry station will serve 1/9 trains only. I thought that it will also serve 4/5/6 trains. Did they change their minds? Jeffrey.

RE: Could it be? A Second Avenue Subway?

It would be cheaper to maintain the current line alignment. To put Lex line trains on (an already BUSY) S.F. (South Ferry for non-New Yawkas) terminal would create a bottleneck that they're trying to prevent in the first place!! For sure the SAS would alleviate a lot of the problems faced by S.I. (dat's Staten 'Eye'land for youse non-New Yawkas)-NYC/NYC-S.I. commuters by lowering the person "bandwidth" needed at B.G. (that's Bowling Green for youse non-New Yawkas) and giving Brooklynites (like myself) more options at Whitehall Street (closest BMT station to S.F.)IIRC, the MTA is looking at condemnation at a handful of sites on the Upper East Side to place infrastructure and station access buildings/elevators.Stuart D. What should they call the line, and what color? A blank circle with the numbers 10 and 12 got my vote!-NHtrainCould it be? A Second Avenue Subway? – image 6 Could it be? A Second Avenue Subway? – image 7

RE: Could it be? A Second Avenue Subway?

Since the line is conforming to BMT/IND/"B" division specs, then it would be a lettered line.Available letters: H (reserved for 8th Avenue), I (never gonna happen), K (reserved for 8th Avenue), O (never gonna happen either), P (now, there's a funny reason for the TA never using this...more details by request only), T (used to be used for the West End line back in the day), U (Hey U!), X (Uhm...maybe...), and Y (Why, why, WHY!?!). If you're thinking about double letters, fughedboutit. Went out back in '85.Of course, if they route trains in from Brooklyn through Whitehall Street, as planned, maybe a variant of the N or R in a different color may work.Stuart D. Guberman

There was short-lived "KK" route that ran from 168th Street in Queens to 6th Avenue/57th Street in Manhattan in late 1960s to mid 1970s. Jeffrey.

RE: Could it be? A Second Avenue Subway?

There are only so many B-division expansions possible, so why not bring back the A-division? You have no limits to how many IRT lines can be built! There has not been a new IRT line/expansion since the 7 line opened. It's about time we had a new IRT line!

RE: Could it be? A Second Avenue Subway?

The line has already been built (in some places) built to "B" division specs (the portions in Harlem and in Chinatown for example.)Plus for it to be able to connect to the 63rd Street connector, it must be "B"/"C" division capable.Stuart D. Guberman
