Ok. I have a "real" railroad question (or two). What is a manifest freight? Is it a block of cars from one yard to another that is not a hotshot? Also, what is the difference between a merchandise freight and manifest freight? Can a merchandise freight be a manifest freight?Do these descriptions have to do with the priority on the rail; i.e. does a manifest freight rank above a local but below a unit train or intermodal?THanks for any info.(BTW I did use the search function but didn't see an answer).GH
A Manifest Freight is a Mixed Consist of Cars ( For example the train would be made up of cars like Oil Tankers , Grain Cars , Lumber or Centerbeam cars , sometimes they throw an Auto Rack or two in , and coal hoppers . Yes Priority does matter , Like up here on the Rail line that I live near has UPS trains and they have the Highest Priority ( Or they are Z trains wich also means that they are UPS trains ) Southern Pacific will live on forever in the hearts of the Red and Gray Railfans Shane Palus smp1151@sbcglobal.net
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe merchandise freight is just another way to say a manifest freight. I don't believe the two terms have anything to do with priority.Intermodals are generally the highest prioirty trains (except for passenger trains), with manifests being the next highest prioirty trains, and unit trains after that. Depending on the railroad, intermodals and manifests can also be divided up into subcategories with regards to prioirity. For exmaple, the BNSF has at least 3 different priority rankings for interemodal trains (Q,P,Z), and manifest freights have two priority rankings (M,H).Jordan L. http://home.earthlink.net/~bnsfjordan
