Yesterday while foaming I saw a hopper car (Burgundy) with a large square cut in the sides. As the train passed, a saw that there was another hole on the other side. Any ideas as to what that is?And today..I saw a MOW flatcar with stuff on it, then a Jordan Spreader as the last car on the train.
Train was as follows:SOO SD40 (?) Red/White
CP SD40-2
SOO SD40 (?) Candy Apple Red
CP SD40-2Then a general manfest..mostly hoppersThen the two MOW'sThe snowplow was brown and yellow, with Erie Mining Co on the sides. With the letters "ME" on the sides. Maybe this was grafiti (as someone had wrote smaller infront of ME a very rude word), but I'm thinking this was it's designation, as it looked profesional, and much bigger. Why was this on a CP train? Did CP buy it from the LTV when they went out of business? and what are the plans? Scrap? or restoration? Thanks

RE: 2 Questions...

I believe the extra two rails are a safety mechanism to keep the train on the bridge in case of a derailment. Anyone else know for sure?

Eh, where did my signature go?
Where has my favourite LUL train gone? Maybe it was sent for bolt checking again...

RE: 2 Questions...

They can still fall over the side. The purpose of the extra rails is to capture the wheels of the trucks and keep them moving in the direction of travel. It is much better to have the wheels bumping along the ties then to turn cross wise which will result in that car and a bunch of others going over the edge. They are effective.

RE: 2 Questions...

RE: Holes? If the holes you are referring to, are in the side of wagons that were containing ballast or stones, then the wagon has probably had its use changed to carry this heavier commodity and the holes now stop over filling of the wagon by allowing the excess stone to fall away.
