Nov-09-01, 05:19 AM (EST) "Stopping at signals" Hi everyoneI was just wondering how far the engineer would normally stop the train from a red signal. Would it vary from railroad to railroad, or is it some sort of national standard. I'm just trying to operate my trains in a more realistic fashion, so any input would be helpful.-Andrew Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Nov-09-01, 11:00 PM (EST) 1. "RE: Stopping at signals" Hi Andrew,If you are interested in this level of detail, it is safe to say that you would probably be interested in downloading the General Code of Operating Rules (GCOR), and printing it out. You will be able to gain access to this and other related documents at this site:http://www.bnsf-ttc.com/bnsftime/index.htmlWith that said, here is what I found:In section 9.5, it implies that the train needs to stop before any portion of it passes the signal itself. In practical terms, I imagine the engineer probably stops at a distance such that the signal is easy to keep an eye on.On the other hand, in section 6.8, it says that if the stop is being made for the purpose of being met or passed (such as at the end of a siding), the train must stop at least 400 ft(!) from the signal if the length of the train permits.BTW, since you are obviously into details, you might also be interested in the book "The Railroad, What it is, What it Does", by John H. Armstrong. It provides a lot of background into how railroads operate, everything from track design to terminal operations. I have a link to some places where you can get the book at my web site. Usually We would stop were it easy to see it without straining our neck to see it.condMike Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
