This might seem to be a strange question to ask, but is the BN 2333 a normal GP38-2? I could not find it on www.google.com or any photo archives. The reason I am asking is because it appeared longer than other GP38-2's, had a slightly different type of nose, and had some red markings that I don't see on other BN locomotives. And a wierd thing about it is that it said SOUTHERN sort of near the front steps. This seems very strange because I actually live in Grand Rapids, MN, about 190 miles north of Northtown, so basically half of the engines I see say NORTHTOWN and the other half are unmarked.
BNSF 2333 is ex-Burlington Northern 2333, ex-St. Louis & San Francisco 478, a GP38-2 built in December 1976. It's one in a block of 107 that kept their BN numbers through the merger. Other locomotives built along with 2333 include:http://archive.trainpix.com/BN/EMDORIG/GP38-2/2332.HTM http://archive.trainpix.com/BN/EMDORIG/GP38-2/2334.HTMI can't find anything odd about it. Maybe it's been damaged or something, and the nose got put back together in an odd way. The "SOUTHERN" marking appears to be normal for this range of units; perhaps it's just passing through your area. To paraphrase Ensign Chuck Keith, "The GP38-2: Remarkable for being completely unremarkable."

Thank you. I have seen number 2335, and it has no indication of being Southern. 2335 also doesn't have that same nose. Would 2335 reside in Northtown? The reason I am asking about the 2333 is because it is on the Grand Rapids to Superior local train from Blandin Paper. What would this train be classified as under BNSF's train number system? (ex. QNYLA)
You're welcome. I haven't the foggiest as to what the "SOUTHERN" means. If you've seen 2332 and 2334-5, and they're not like 2333, then 2333 is probably something that's been modified in the field. I also don't have the slightest idea as to what the BNSF would call a train. Anything I know about that railway is second-hand knowledge gained through osmosis. There's plenty of BNSF fans around here who probably can help you figure it out.

didn't the 2333 have that edtended range cab thing that kind alooke dlike a CF7 cab installed? Hence short nose, long cab, with tiger face.-------------
In actuality, this is John, not Bob Netzlof. Thanks, sorry for the confusion.
hi all, The word "Southern" is the locos maintenance point. Look on the frames of alot of the old BN units, and you will see words like "Alliance" or "Northtown" or "Clyde". I have seen "Southern" on many locos through the years. I have no clue where it is though...lol Milwaukee Road did the same thing in later years. "Bensenville" and "St. Paul" were their mtnce. points. Hope this clears that up for yas!! LAter!
