Recently, I have seen diesel locos running on the NEC Extension. Do electric locos still run on this route?

RE: Electric Trains on NEC Extension

Thier still running them. Amtrak did waste all that money to rebuilt their AEM-7's and then not run them especially their acela's and hhp-8's. Who know's why their not running electrics up their, I havent heard anything. Warner.

It is becuase of that train that pulled down that wire it all most killed the passengers it is 25000 volts that is a lot. they fear that it may happen agan that would be bad. it is because the wires are old and amtrak dose not have the money to fix it.

I assume that you mean the Harrisburg Line which PREDATES the actual DC-New York-Boston Northeast Corridor, no?I believe it's because Amtrak still doesn't have quite enough electrics to run on it. (I think they're still trying to overhaul the AEM-7DC's.) That and they probably feel that it's not worth taking a 125mph electric from the electric-demanding "high speed" NEC and putting it on a mostly 90mph line, which P-42s can handle just fine for the time being. I imagine that when SIGNIFICANT improvements have been made on the Harrisburg Line (more than just a few concrete ties in Lancaster...), and repairs its two currently fried AEM-7DCs, they'll speed things up with some electrics on the Harrisburg Line.As for the concrete ties on SEPTA trackage north of Philly, don't quote me on this, but I imagine that it's so that Amtrak has a spare track in good condition, so passengers don't go bouncing around every-which-way in case Amtrak has to do some track or wire work (Upgrading the ancient catenary, maybe? ^_^) on track 2. Or, maybe Amtrak's starting to take over the trackage lent out to SEPTA trackage and force them to speed their butts up or get their wimpy, pansy-man Silverliners flattened by an Acela. (Maybe THAT's why the Acelas were built like tanks! XP)

RE: Electric Trains on NEC Extension

Actually the Harrisburg line is currently being refurbished and re-electrified (actually repairing the wires where necessary) along with a grade crossing elimination program... all of this is intended to bring the speed back up to 110mph+ (Just like it was in PRR days in the 30s and 40s - LOL) and all of this is being paid for by the Taxpayers of PA....
BTW, it's not just a few ties at Lancaster.... The whole damn thing is being converted from stick rail (Still there in a lot of areas) to welded ribbon and even concrete ties in some areas.....Chuck Schneider

RE: Electric Trains on NEC Extension

Now I remember! I took the Pennsylvanian from New York to Pittsburgh last month, and from Lancaster to Harrisburg, the ride got pretty rough. I assume the Pennsylvanian and the Three Rivers will continue running with diesels, is that correct? The Three Rivers can't go past 90 on that stretch anyway because MHCs, ExpressTrak reefers, and Roadrailers are added at Philadelphia. The Pennsylvanian, on the other hand, uses a P42 or AEM7 and about 7 amcans, so it can run at 110 MPH, and it must have on parts of the run through New Jersey. It's a good thing the Main Line is 4 track to Paoli; Septa trains can't get in the way of Amtrak.

RE: Electric Trains on NEC Extension

I know, I know. ^_^ I remember hearing how the Harrisburg Line was getting the oh là là treatment with new rail, ties, and catenary, I'm just saying that last time I heard about the progress on the renovations, the new ties (and rail I think...) in Lancaster were the majority of what had been done. There's no doubt in my mind that the Harrisburg Line will be all good and ready for some high speed sooner or later, I'm just saying that until they've made much more progress and gotten the tracks and catenary up to 20th Century standards (First class country half a century behind the rest of the world... -_-;; ), it's a waste to run a high-speed electic on a (for-the-time-being) low-speed line.
