RE: What is this car???

The corrugated panels on the car side are actually the ends of some bulk bins, which are unloaded from the car with a forklift. The idea is to carry dry granular materials which do not flow well and cannot readily be carried in a bulk hopper car or 'airslide' car. I have typically seen these containers used to carry synthetic rubber 'crumbs', which are the raw material used to make automobile tires. However, sometimes plastic pellets, or types of dry chemicals which are not damaged by the weather, are carried this way.

Ahh, the mystery is solved! I see these cars occasionally, usually going to or from Glenwood Yard in Raleigh, I always wondered what they were. For a while I thought it was a special car to haul those containers that are put in airplanes.
