Nov-07-01, 04:18 AM (EST) "Strange (or not so strange) Sighting" The other morning I saw a couple of Conrail engines pulling a freight into Beacon Park Yard in Boston while I passed the yard on my way to work. Now I had thought Conrail had been fully assimilated by CSX. Were they just a coupla engines that still after all these years not been painted? Or is Conrail still around in part? I haven't seen a Conrail engine there in years.-Andy

Nov-07-01, 07:14 AM (EST) 1. "RE: Strange (or not so strange) Sighting" Conrail still exists, but not as a Class 1 rail operation. In North Jersey, part of South Jersey-Pennsylvania, and in the Detroit area of Michigan it's called Shared Assets - it acts as a delivery service for both host railroads ( NS/CSXT ). Their locos are smaller units with a couple of SD45-2's thrown in for drag service, but they usually remain in their operating area. Also, Conrail had a vast amount of locomotives ( not near what they inherited when it was formed in 1976, but we're talking about servicable, running units here ) and it'll take some time to repaint all of these. The next time you see them, look at the cab number - it should be a "patch" job with the reporting marks of PRR ( NS ) or NYC ( CSXT ) added as a token gesture to acknowledge the historical importance of the Pennsylvania RR and the New York Central RR. Nov-08-01, 01:39 PM (EST) 3. "RE: Strange (or not so strange) Sighting" Here's a strange one, I was in Glamis (Southern California desert) where the UP goes through. I saw one train with a Conrail engine on the point, and later on I saw a solid Norfolk Southern consist pulling an autorack train, the last engine in that consist was an old high-nose EMD unit.John Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Was it Saturday that you saw this train? Just wondering because I live in Yuma, AZ and I saw the same NS train Saturday.Mark Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

"RE: Strange (or not so strange) Sighting" LAST EDITED ON Nov-09-01 AT 11:29 AM (EST)Sometime I'll have to get a digital camera and take some shots of Beacon Park and post em up. I pass by it nearly every day on my way to work. It's a pretty small yard (relatively) so it's always super crowded unlike some yards. It must take the poor switchers all day just to get one car from the back of the furball to the front. It was weird seeing a Conrail train there though since I haven't seen any Conrail trains around here since 1990something when CSX took over the Northeast. What's really fun is seeing the MBTA Commuter rail trains race through the yard at 60+ mph since the yard is directly on the mainline.-Andy

Nov-13-01, 08:36 PM (EST) 9. "RE: Strange (or not so strange) Sighting" LAST EDITED ON Nov-13-01 AT 08:36 PM (EST)Yeah, it's pretty depressing. The B&M yard in Somerville/East Cambridge is getting gobbled up track by track by condos and office parks, CSX's Beacon Park has been bought by BU so they can reduce that for more dorms for their asinine students, and Amtrak will never ever show a profit. Even with the dip in air travel Amtrak can not compete when for the same price or less you can fly. I hope Amtrak can keep expanding rather than shut down routes. They just opened a new one in the NE extending the NECorridor service from Boston up to Portland ME, reinstating a line that has been shutdown since 1960something. Plus Amtrak is FINALLY modifying their baggage cars to be more like European ones with bike racks so you can bring your bike now on some trains without completely disassembling it into a box.-Andy
