Goodbye… Trolls take another member

FIRST OFF .............. This is NOT a " I'm taking my toys and leaving " post.However there will not be any further product from me uploaded here.I would like to come back eventually ........ I will have to see I guess.I need time away from the direction things are headed here. I am a paid member until mid April of 2004, and I really need to step back and take a look at what the heck is going on here.I have been around since day one and have seen ALOT of memebers come and go over that time.I swore I wouldn't be one of those " I'm outta here " people, BUT..............all it takes is a few " What the heck is happening e-mails " from a few valued Train-Sim friends to realize that this is totally stupid for me to subject myself to every day.Over the next while you are all going to be surprised at actually " Who doesn't post here anymore "They have chosen to just leave and not say anything. I have chosen to say " bye " as I would wonder about some of you if you were to just disappear.There are quite a few people here I really enjoy, but I will see on alternate forums.There are some that I am sure I will miss here.As for the others......You win !!Anyways.....best of luck to Nels and clan!One last time............LaterTim Kent

I must say, people complain about newbs, but if you go on Battle.Net to play WarCraft or StarCraft youll see tons of games with "No n00bs" in the name. People are trying to entirely lock newbs out there, and that bothers me. Especially since if someone like me goes into the game to see a new map then they are instantly branded a newb when their download starts, and eventually, are banned from the game. People complain about newbs, yes, but utterly banning them from games? That is a bit rash. Now, here, we are banning ourselves because of people who do not know what to do, people who need help with things. When I came here, the first question in my mind was "Why doesnt the snow work?". I never asked it, but I finally saw the answer in the MSN forum, before then I didnt even know there was a help menu for MSTS. I have learned so much about the simulator, it astounds me. Why do you think noobs come here? Just to be members? No, they come for help and answers. If we are annoyed by that then so be it, but wouldnt the satisfaction of helping someone be better than banning ourselves just because of the question? Steve it's not Neubees per se that are the problem...
I enjoy helping out the ones with ligitimate problems....It's the really lazy ones we are now getting on here who won't lift a finger to help themselves and are unable to read the FAQs because they are functional illiterates. IMO, We are being innundated with the spoiled kids, gimmee-gimmees and village idiots.
I'm sorry but I have to support Tim and Kev on this one....Prediction, if no attempt is made to reign in the trolls and we continue to be attacked, stalked and irritated by the likes of Georgi and DTA and dkunath and a few other losers compromising the utility of this site to us, NALW will be seeking alternate venues to communicate with our users and distribute our models...

Let's be fair, If Kevin had his reigns yanked up hard ( and I'm not saying he shouldn't have once or twice - hell we all should have ) then I want to know why Georgi and DTA to name just two have not had a size 13 boot jamed up their posteriors!Flame away all you politically correct idiots, I can defend myself.

That's now three longstanding members that have left the forum in just as many days. This HAS to end now, or someday this forum will taken over by the trolls. I must admit, even thought no one has actually crossed me in here lately, the trolling has gotten to me too, and that's why I have been scarcer around here lately. I will NEVER pull out of the forum though. That would be handing another victory to the trolls. Although I am not presumtuous to compare my contributions to the community to the work of any the three members who have just left, I at least try to contribute, which is alot more than can be said for the trolls.Jonathan Nikiforovs.

Damn well said Chuck.I've been to forums where the bickering and fighting has literally pulled the forums off of the servers. It really sucks. i still visit the forum, but almost everytime, I click the lil' red X button in disgust. People who can't type, punctuate, or spell, in EVERY post really "P" me off, maybe it's just one of my pet peeves or something. The forum im talking about, maybe some of you know about it, was rated Kid Safe. That was about 2 years ago. A couple months ago it was as bad as a porno site. Now, It has been cleaned up A LOT, but there are still the trolls and lurkers who can't read the rules. I'd hate to see this forum go away like that. But it's getting closer everyday...

Damn well said Chuck! Lately, I've been a bit harsh in some of my posts, but now I see I'm now on the recieving end of these trolls. I was opening my e-mailbox this morning after I got back in and saw a few, lets say "threatening" e-mails from a few people, one I'm liable to take to one of my ol' folks friends who works for the FBI. This is REALLY getting out of hand and I hope the mods and admin will think about changing their policy on trolls before we lose more of the good guys, including myself. BTW Chuck, a few of us in the chatroom are seriously considering our own site and forum, offlimits to the newbies and trolls, ie, enter by invitation only.Austin

Helping newbies is not a problem if they have a legitimate question that hasn't been answered before. The problem is seeing the same questions over and over ad nauseum, or even worse seeing questions that are already answered by using the MSTS help(that's what it's there for). And don't even get me started on the "when will the (insert train of your choice) be ready?" type of threads. I think you would be rich if you had a dollar for every thread asking about the AEM-7. Illiterate posts are another thing that frankly turns me off as well. As something becomes more popular, you invariably get far too many representatives of "the general public". My grandfather put it best when he said God must have loved stupid people because he made so many of them. Unfortunately, the forums on this site have been falling to the level of the lowest common denominator, but thankfully we've had enough old-timers stay to make it worthwhile to keep visiting. With the departure of three of these people recently I wonder how long this will remain true. I don't plan to go anywhere anytime soon but I don't post as much as I might because of the signal to noise ratio around here and the flame wars.Regarding trolls, the solution is simple if only people would follow a few simple rules:1)Don't bother responding to an idiotic post directed at you no matter how tempting it might be. Trolls use these posts as bait. Don't bite.2)If a troll starts posting in the middle of an otherwise civil discussion between two or more members just pretend they aren't there. Their attempt to disrupt the thread will have failed. Hopefully they'll move on to another thread or better yet another site.3)Ignore any obvious "bait" threads by a member with only a few posts. Chances are the thread isn't a poorly-worded attempt to gain help. The thread will sink away into oblivion eventually.4)Use the alert button only if threatened with bodily harm by somebody. I know this may sound controversial but there is a method to my madness. If a troll succeeds in getting banned because many people use the alert button but otherwise ignore the troll's posts they will still have succeeded in getting attention. In fact, to some trolls getting banned a few times from the same site is a badge of honor. The best way to deal with trolls is to ignore them completely. I believe there is a Japanese term for it, mokusatsu, which loosely translated means to kill with silent contempt.OK, I've said my piece. I'm sorry to see Kevin go as well. I'll admit he could be abrasive but I liked his style of telling it like it is and letting the chips fall where they may.
