Duluth,Superior?Been there a few years ago,by merchant ship.Bulk Carrier, grain to Italy for pasta.I had to readjust the air\fuel starting interlocks on my main propulsion diesel engines,as the air is so rare 600+feet above sea level.Great place,I still keep an eye on the shipping traffic there, and have enjoyed the local railfan site at

Isn't that the system that nobody wanted to begin with?So now Arthur Leahy, the former CEO of the trabnsit agency is now out here in California trying to get another light rail line up for a county in which nobody wants (or even needs) it.

RE: Twin Cities light rail

>> Isn't that the system that nobody wanted to begin with? <<IIRC, it was our esteemed governor, Jesse “The Body” Ventura, who pushed for the light rail system. Not sure just what the people think of it, thankfully, I live a couple hundred miles north of there. My daughter drives from North Branch to Bloomington for work and if it happens to be rush hour you can easily add a couple hours driving time because of bumper to bumper, stop and go traffic. So, if it would get some cars off the road I would have to believe it’s a good thing. Why anyone would want to live down there is beyond me, but, you have to go where the jobs are I guess.

RE: Twin Cities light rail

The Light rail passes only a few blocks from my house. However when I don't bicycle the short distance to work, I walk so it won't make a profit from my fares. I can imagine taking the LRT to the airport or possibly to the Mall of America. The first cars have been out for testing on short lengths of the track near the maintainance depot. Lots of people wearing safety vests carrying clipboards. The passengers were simulated by bags of sand.-- Phil

RE: Twin Cities light rail

David?!?How are you doing? I haven't seen you around here in quite awhile. As for the light rail, I dunno. I have yet to make it to the Twin Cities, though I hope to do so some day. So I really don't know much about the area. However, I do know that Dallas-Fort Worth is pretty congested, and light rail has been a big hit there. It's even pulled some die-hard, Texas drivers out of their automobiles.I imagine that Twin Cities rail will do alright, if (big IF) it can get the requisite funding.Henry

RE: Twin Cities light rail

Lately I've been keeping an eye on the crossover construction between Nicollet and Hennepin - it is taking forever. Most of the downton stations are nearly complete and yesterday it looked like they were starting to work on the catennary. I live over at Uptown so the LRT is not that useful to me - I need the "West" line which has not been funded as yet so I am not holding my breath. FOr my first attempt at a MSTS route design I wanted somthing samll with complex track and not much for complex terrain - I've selected the Milwaukee Road (now CP) Hiawatha Industrial area which is right next to the LRT line so I'll probably have to put that in as a scenic elementBe Seeing you.

RE: Twin Cities light rail

Having just moved here from the Chicago area, I am paying attention to the lite rail. I hope it is up and runnung asap. What the area lacks is the commuter rail system Chicago has. The wife and I would take Metra on the weekend asnd were able to see the whole city for one fare, another benifit is it eases up on auto traffic, which is another topic in itself (twin cities roads are lacking). Mostly I just enjoy riding trains. We ought to get together Lone_Gunman and do some rail fanning together.
