Here is my experience.Well I was listening to the scanner and heard "all grade crossing must be approached, ready to stop and protect the crossing" so i figured i could get some nice shots of slow moving trains. So i hopped on the bike and went down to the tracks. Noting all traffic lights were out.The grade crossing worked which i found when a GO pulled up and stopped at the signals. a Few minutes later he comes by:

A few minutes after he enters the station area.
VIA 917 pulls up and stops at the West side signals.
For maybe 10 minutes he sat there.
Then got under way. After he came thru- a GO pulled up to same lights.
He stopped there for 45 minutes. And waited.
I think he got a 564 eventually. And to make it worse. He was loaded.Well i was hoping to get 95 and 83.
83 was an express to London(no stops at oakville) due to leave union at 1715- due aldershot 1750.
and 95 is a Toronto to Niagra falls train. due Oakville 1808.Well i head home and it eventually gets dark. I found myself reading trains by candle light I flip on the scanner and hear the real fun...VIA 83: Arrives Canpa 2227. Gets a 564 and procedes
Problem was They couldnt 564 thru Canpa due to not know how the switch plant is. a foreman checks it and trains can finnaly flow thru.
VIA 79 arrived Canpa at 2200. There were a TON of GO trains out there.
Struggling to get thru.
The mimico Switch plant was down. So if using switches it had to be by hand.VIA 79 arrives oakville 2321. Hes due here at 1937.
VIA 78 arrives here at 2337 hes due here at: 2058
to quote a crew member "All west bounds we've met, say theres around 15 trains ahead of us" Said by the engineer to the Service manager- 2340.
VIA 95 arrives here at 2300. he is due here at 1808.GO 928 arrives Port Credit at: 2345- hes due there at: 1844.
Those were just some of the trains i mentioned.

RE: Power outages affect on the Railroads

Interesting! Out here in the West on the main lines all the switches and signals have battery backup so they will work for about 48 hours without any commercial power. The BNSF Argintine yard now uses solar charged battery powered switches. I never though about a lot of the switch yards requiring commercial power. What a problem. Thanks for the interesting observation.
