First of all forget the birds and make it a bumblebee and you get this locomotive

Yes, that is a D&RGW K-28 # 473 in it's 1950-51 paint scheme, a wreck ended it. This year it is being brought back as part of Railfest, I will be riding this and photograping it. And in case your wondering, the diamond stack is a shroud over the shotgun stack, and the headlight is also fake.Of the Birds and the Bees – image 2

RE: Of the Birds and the Bees

got an e-mail on this, it will be the same locomotive, 473, 473 was not destroyed in the wreck, it was rebuilt without the paint.
473 has suffered the following wreck/incidents:
1951: derailment caused by sun kink, landed in Animas River
1970's(or perhaps 1980's) Sideswiped a backhoe, ripped open the air resivore
1987: Sitting in Durango Yard, Fully steamed, t-boned by full size tractor trailer that had runaway on the hill above town, potatoes, "cooked " potatoes everywhere.
1989: Was stitting in Durango Roundhouse connected to it's FULLY LOADED tender when the roundhouse burned to the ground, 6 locomotives were severly damaged, 473 suffred the worst, back in service less than 2 years later.
It's a bad luck loco, but is very lucky to still be around.Of the Birds and the Bees – image 6

RE: Of the Birds and the Bees

It makes me said to here that it is gone. I want to cry because it is my most favrite steam locomotive? Is the first one still here or did it die? And is there plans to rebuild it fully with it all working with not any of it fake? Or is it gone for ever? Is there a 1 foot gauge line or is it some ones joke?

Response to Kenya: it's the same locomotive, it's been wreck all those times and has been rebuilt, it only wore the paint scheeme in that photo from 1950 to 1951 when it jummped the tracks, nothing major, but she was out of service for a long while.Of the Birds and the Bees – image 10

RE: Of the Birds and the Bees

Good Question, through diffrent message boards, and just talking to the people in Durango at the Ticket Counter, It seems, that 473 will be running on saturday, only the schedule does not show which train it will be pulling. From what I understand It will be pulling the Presidential Speical (Nomad, Cinco Animas, Gen William Jackson Palmer) up to Silverton and Back.
I'm riding the Friday Train, Sitting in one of the gondolas, dont know wheere(side or how far back) But will be in silverton on Saturday for photos and stuff, will be riding the Galloping Goose (5) on that day too, I'll either be wearing a railcamp hat, or Chevy Racing.Of the Birds and the Bees – image 11

From what I understand It will be pulling the Presidential Speical (Nomad, Cinco Animas, Gen William Jackson Palmer) up to Silverton and Back. That would make the most sence. I am very excited to get texture shots of all the private cars. I only have pictures of the nomad right now and its hard to shoot good photo's when they're in the roundhouse. Now if can just get a nice NG passenger car model made I'd be set.I still plan on going. Not sure how to describe myself. I'll probably have a SLC Olympic hat on.See you laterNick
