Oct-24-01, 09:46 PM (EST) "Changing a Windows File Type" Slight problem with DAT file. All my DAT files are showing linked to NOTEPAD.
I want to change these DAT files to open with EDIT-PAD.Went to WINDOWS EXPLORER - VIEW - FOLDER OPTIONS - FILE TYPES to delete the Registered DAT File type to NotePad. But the DAT registration does NOT appear in FILE TYPES for some weird reason.I tried to make a NEW TYPE registered file, but of course got told instantly the extension DAT is already in use by file type "Data File" Of course already knew this seeing all DAT files are linked to Notepad. Can anyone put me on the right track on how to change the DAT files from NOTEPAD to EDITPAD, especially seeing DAT files do not show up in Registered File Types.John Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Oct-24-01, 10:05 PM (EST) 1. "RE: Changing a Windows File Type" First, I uncheck the box to "hide extensions on known file types", I dunno how the hell I can know what it is if the extension is hidden. Second, right click on the file with the .dat extension, choose "open with", and check the box for "always use this program". This is with windows98SE and the explorer set to windows 3.1 classic style, I dunno if this works with other OS's or "view as web page" or anything. If right click don't give the "open with", try shift right click. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Oct-25-01, 03:23 AM (EST) 2. "RE: Changing a Windows File Type" G'day Jim,
Thanks for this, that was quick answer.I have Windows 98 installed and I for the life of me could not remember how to do this. It's simple when it's in the File Types. I use 3 removable hard drives, (1) "Apps", (2) "FltSim", and (3) for "MSTS". (do not get conflics this way, plus plenty of room for Fs & MSTS) But somehow on the MSTS drive the DAT file does not appear in the Registered Files. On other 2 hard drives it's okay.I just tried the SHIFT + right click on this my "APPs" drive and sure enough the "Open With" menu appeared, and the "Choose which program you want to use" box appeared, so after I get off here, I will change the drives over and give it a go.Thanks very much Jim,
John. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Oct-25-01, 01:11 PM (EST) 3. "RE: Changing a Windows File Type" Hi,I am using EditPad Pro and it is has an option to do this. I don't know if you use EditPad Pro, but go to Options > Preferences and choose the tab File Types. Now you have a button to always Edit the file with EditPad Pro.But as I said, this is for EditPad Pro.Dick van den Hoven Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Oct-25-01, 05:05 PM (EST) 4. "RE: Changing a Windows File Type" G'day Dick,Thanks for answering me.
I am using EditPad lite and yes it has that feature as well. Sorry Er..... forgot it was there. I remember now when I first put EditPad in a long time ago on my "Apps" drive I used that feature. But forgot it by the time I got a seperate removable hard drive just to run my Train Sim on. Old timer's disease I guess.Actually I wanted to open the MSTS Camfig.dat. Normally I open DAT files with EditPad as it will read them. But after I used the "Shift + Right click", I then changed the DAT file over to WordPad, as WordPad opens and SAVES the TrainSim camfig.dat file, as I did not realise I could mess with this file.A few days ago I downloaded a hacked camfig.dat file where instead of being in a helicopter coupling up trains, it now shows where you are "ON THE GROUND" alonside the engine or wagons where a shunter would normally be. Where it should have been in the first place, not up in a helicopter. Well not the Railway I worked for most of my life, maybe we were behind the times. I was not completely satisfied with the way the hack is set up. The part you alter in the camfig.dat file is......
camera ( CamTypeCoupling
CamType ( CamTypeCoupling CamControlFull ********
OH!.... anyone else reading this. A WARNING....
REMEMBER to make a BACKUP of the camfig.dat file first, BEFORE messing with it.
********I'm a retired "hands on" railwayman myself and I like to try to get my Train Sim as I knew the job was.
Getting there slowly. John Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
