Well, I know I spend too much time thinking about trains, but I had to chuckle at myself this afternoon...went with a buddy to see S.W.A.T. (good, messy, guy fun, but predictable) and found myself train watching during the climactic fight scene. Bad guy rappels off a bridge into the BNSF yard in LA, good guy follows him and lands on a moving flat car. As they fight, there is a fair amount of train movement going on...and I'm looking for road numbers on the locomotives!FWIW, the only one I could make out was 1201.Anybody know if that engine works the LA yard? LOLKurt

Haha this is like Dasha Vu for me. Seeing what you like in movies.
over at the Fiero Forum the guys have a list of nearly 30 Fiero Sightings in movies including Ferris Bullers day off, Star Trek 4 to Termanator 3. So seeing trains in a movie isn new. I just think its funny what people pick to catch in movies.Don Pottorff

Lol, Michelle Rodriguez is in S.W.A.T isn’t she??? I better be off to see it then if she is!! 3 movies where there are major train scenes....1) Fast & The Furious: Former D&RGW GP40-2 on a lumber goods train - Vin Diesel almost crashes into the loco (anyone see the irony?)2) Lethal Weapon 4: Some sort of EMD product crashes into a car that was pushed onto the tracks by the "bad guys" - Lol3) The Fugitive: Harrison Ford's prison bus rolls onto the Illinois Southern (fictional) and a U18B, GP30 and some sort of slug crash into the bus!

4) Italian Job (new one): Steve in the stolen brown Bronco chases Charlie and the gang in their Minis through a Union Pacific railyard, at somepoints almso tbeing smashed by a switcher. The minis then load onto a Thrall door boxcar, which is coupled to the end of an Amtrak train.5) I forget the name: Our hero pops up over a retaining wall onto a railroad grade with a string of Pittsburg & Shawmut hopper cars on it. (I thought it was neat, the P&S is a local shortline...)

If so then the film your're looking for is Wrongly Accused with Leslie Neilsen but you are right that is a LMAO scene. As to trains in film I still like the movie The Flimflam Man with George C Scott lots and lots of CSX & NS predecessor roadsGary S

The movie was "Wrongfully Accused" with Leslie Nielson.
Take note that the train uses plungers for couplers. The roadname of the train is hillarious.mrWM734

Made a mistake in the post above this... The FEC Freight ends up on the Florida Monorail... LMAO.. I meant the chase ended up on the monorail and the baddie's life ends with about 600 volts surging through his body with a bone-crunching splat.

1976 I might add one of the few films where the train becomes a runaway in a plausible manner, the baddie shoots the engineer(the fireman bailed when the guy with the M16 enters the cab,hey he ain't stupid) and in order to keep the train going drops a toolbox on the deadmans pedal.Gary S

Bad Boys II: Martin Lawrence and Will Smith chase a van supposedly carrying Ecstasy in a coffin bound for a research center. Many dead bodies thrown from the van, one spins out and its head gets detached, (LMAO)An FEC freight with a GP38-2 (?) for power crosses the road and barely misses the van. Eventually ends up on a Florida Monorail (?) and henchman gets electrocuted by third rail and gets run over. Many shocked faces.

Trains Magazine Review for "Runaway Train": Does Jon Voight die at the end of this so-called existential thriller shot on the Alaska Railroad? Well, he never came back in a sequel. Another safety tip: Keep your fingers out of the couplers during a slack run-in.. Appeared on the 10 Worst Train Movies.

"Runaway Train" was a great and tense movie!!
Not to take anything away from Voight, but Eric Roberts plays the best nutcase (he was a great 'nut-job' in Star 80 as well). But, one of my all-time favorite scenes was in "Airplane".
As the aircraft is starting to roll down the runway for take-off, the hero (Robert Hays) is chasing after the plane, yelling up to the girlfriend (Julie ??), who is standing in the open (Boeing 707) doorway, looking down through the mist, trying to hear what he is saying. From her perspective we view Hays running along the platform, periodically running into gantries every 30 or 40 feet. As we listen to the ever increasing puffing and chugging of the jet liner picking up speed, momentum and lift.I was in tears!!!!!!!!

Yes, from the picture of Jon Voight on the nose of an F Unit in my issue of TRAINS, it does look exiting but, "They get everything about railroads wrong, and are not fun to watch, either," quote TRAINS.

Hmmm talking about train cameos in movies, I always got a kick out of this movie blunder: An Amtrak F40 with a few amfleets make an appearance in the movie Grease. The train appears for a few seconds during the drag racing seen in the concrete river. Not to 1950’s Joe Hildenbrand

John
Easy enough,The film substituted Woodstock IL for Pucsutauny(sp) and the train sequence was shot out at IRM in Union IL (also where they shot the train sequnce for League Of Their Own)as I understand it the film company paid to restore the units CB&Q mars light rig to full operation and then found out that it didn't look right on film and so was left dark.
I've had a chance to talk to some of the IRM folk and while they like Hollywood showing up at the museum they've said the Hollywood types just don't understand the physics of that much steel moving at speedGary S
