RE: kenya and the miss spelling

Hi Kenya,I think the reason some people are picking on you is that if you write your posts in to much of a hurry, and don't take the trouble to correct errors, you can end up with messages which are hard to understand. The ocasional spelling error is no problem (usually), but a lot of them can be a distraction - especially if they are very basic errors. Poor punctuation, or worse, no punctuation, can make an otherwise intelligible posting into giberish which is hard to understand. I've struggled with several of your messages, trying to figure out what you were trying to say - and you are not the only person who is sometimes hard to understand for that reason. Please, may I suggest that you do pay a little more attention to spelling, and punctuation. Slow down just a bit, a take the time to review and correct your posts before sending them. When it's easy to understand what you are asking, or suggesting, you will get better responses from the members here.Best wishes,John

RE: kenya and the miss spelling

>Do you idiots not have anything better to do than to pick on
>somebody about spelling? No we don't Jake!
And let me explain why I am such a stickler for spelling and grammar.
In a written medium, like a forum or bulletin board, the first impression you make on people is by your writing. If you write like a bozo then you will be dismissed out of hand by a lot of people.
Maybe it's not fair but that is the way the world works.
Don't believe me? You just show up for a professional job interview in ratty jeans and unwashed and see how far you get.The fundamental aim of most of the posters on here, less the trolls, is to either communicate ideas or ask questions. If you can't or won't spell correctly and are too damn lazy to use a spelling checker then why should we pay any attention to you? The whole idea of spelling and grammar not being important is, in my opinion, a result of the current fad in Outcome Based Education. Which is a concept being advanced by teachers who are themselves functional illiterates. Once again, in the real world spelling and grammar are important tools in communicating ideas. I predict a singular lack of success and a career ceiling in menial jobs for the more militant among us who refuse to communicate in proper English or American or Canadian or Australian. The guys who don't have English as their native language obviously get a "get out of jail free card" ! In fact most of them are much more effective communicators then some of our native "Deese, Dems, Dose, Axed a question Dudes"!What is so galling to me is the number of University students on here who communicate in a fashion that would embarrass an illiterate person. IMO they are either trying to be cute or are lazy. That behavior pattern is all the reference I need to judge their characters, given that I do not know them personally and can't see how they conduct themselves otherwise.Chuck Schneider

LAST EDITED ON Aug-09-03 AT 09:46 AM (EDT)

I'm not nit-picky about spelling, myself... You see, I spent 8 years of my childhood in foreign countries and sometimes it was really hard to express myself clearly in the foreign language. Expressing yourself in a forum is different. There are plenty of people who post here who do not speak english as first language. Example: There are many people here that speak German as a first language and we seldom have difficulty understanding them. Why?This is probably due to the fact that the non-english speaker will take the extra time required to formulate coherent questions or answers. They generally post with a reasonably good attempt at having good grammar and punctuation. They clearly understand the potential result of being misunderstood. When the "regulars" start bashing poor spelling and grammar, here is what I think is going on...1) The reader thinks you are LAZY. (Why should they help you?)2) They think you are less intelligent than you probably are.3) They cannot understand what you are "going on" about so all the reader can do is become annoyed with your post's poor grammar and spelling.4) You will become "marked". As people see more and more of your LAZY posts, they will learn to completely ignore what you say, or your posts will be viewed only for their "entertainment" value. Need I remind anyone about "alphabet boy"?5) This is not the "HOOD" and we do not react favorably to "133t Sp34k" either. 1337 $PE@k I5 nO+ Tol3R4+ED By thE oLD CURmUD93ON$ OPH +he GROuP. TRANSLATION: "Elite Speak" is not tolerated by the old curmudgeons of the group. Neither is Instant Message Slang... so use your lazy language ONLY where it is tolerated by the majority and not the minority.so...This can all be corrected with a little more effort on the part of the original thread author.
As Chuck said, first impressions are very important.

You also have the ability to correct a "post" shortly after it has been sent if you need to correct any clarity, punctuation and spelling errors. Not doing so only reinforces the points made above.

I agree, but ......

LAST EDITED ON Aug-09-03 AT 10:41 AM (EDT)

As you will see from my earlier posting in this thread, I agree that some trouble with spelling and punctuation is necessary.BNSF4723 wrote "Its not so much the spelling either, the annoying way the sentences drag on without paragraph form and proper punctuation... its not just me being nit-picky, its really hard and annoying to read."This is right on the mark. Poor punctuation makes a post more difficult to read than it need be, and can lead to misunderstanding also. Complete absence of punctuation can make it extremely difficult to understand, or sometimes quite impossible.
Chuck made some comments about education: I wonder if that may be a local issue, since I can't honestly say that I've seen really serious problem along those lines where I live (Southern Ontario, Canada), but I have heard a few complaints, and I did think that my own son's education was not as strict as mine when it comes to using good English in projects not belonging to the English course (not that they were allowed to be sloppy - just not as strict as my 1950's British education).I would suggest, though, that those who want to criticize others on this type of topic should be meticulous themselves about the way they write. In message 11, GaryH2 wrote:
"I had a high school English teacher that put "Dis wiff dat." LOL! And she was going to teach me? "Shouldn't that be:
"I had a high school English teacher who put "Dis wiff dat." LOL! And she was going to teach me? "And "put"? does that mean wrote or spoke?. If spoken, and without any other knowledge of the situation and person involved, could that be an indication of a speech impediment (disability, not lazy speech) such that she had problems pronouncing the "th" sound? Now I'm really being a nit-picker, aren't I?.
Now for the "But ..."Mention has already been made of corespondents whose first language is not English. Some people born in England might wonder whether that should include Americans (just kidding!!). I think we can usually recognize when someone is trying hard to write in a language which is not their first language, and most people will make an effort to accommodate and understand. I believe this is true in just about any part of the world. However, there is another group of people for whom I think we should be making allowances - and they are harder to identify. There are quite a lot of people around who, for one reason or another, didn't learn to read and/or write when they were young, and are now struggling with this handicap. Some of those folk now go to Adult Literacy classes - and the results in some cases are quite remarkable. Note I wrote "some cases". Learning to read and write as an adult is very difficult, so many struggle with this and never achieve really fluid writing skills. For those who are struggling with learning to write when an adult, especially when into middle-age or later, I am quite willing to make an effort to understand what they are writing. The only problem is to identify those people and separate them from those who are just lazy or "cute"
Lastly, about Spell CheckingUsing a spell checker is fine, and very helpful. However, spell checkers have limitations. All they are is a list of words and a search/compare programme. The spell checker looks takes the word in question and searches the list to see if it can find a match. If not and error is flagged and near matches offered as suggestions. They CAN NOT tell the difference between valid words misused - like the difference between "two, "to", & "too" or "there" & "their" or "of" and "off". I will offer a little anecdote to illustrate this, then close with a piece of poetry on the subject which should make the point while giving a smile to everyone. Some years ago, I did telephone technical support for Lotus Word Pro (still my favourite word processor). One day I had a call from a customer who was reporting an error with the spell checker. He stated that he was using the word "assess", and sometimes mistakenly left off the last "s". He claimed that the spell checker wasn't picking up this error. Of course he was correct, and I reproduced the problem, but then the spell checker was also correct. Take the last "s" off "assess" and you have "asses", which is the plural form of "ass". When I pointed that out to the customer, he was somewhat embarrassed - fortunately this was a good humoured customer. Now for the verse I promised:

Eye halve a spelling chequer
It came with my pea sea
It plainly marques four my revue
Miss steaks eye kin knot sea.
Eye strike a key and type a word
And weight four it two say
Weather eye am wrong oar write
It shows me strait a weigh.
As soon as a mist ache is maid
It nose bee fore two long
And eye can put the error rite
Its rare lea ever wrong.
Eye have run this poem threw it
I am shore your pleased two no
Its letter perfect awl the weigh
My chequer tolled me sew.
(author unknown)CheersJohnp.s. I did run this post through my spell checker in Word Pro - set for English not American spelling. And that poem passed without anything being flagged.Edited to make minor improvements to the wording of some parts.

Spelling is not my strong siut and half the time I hit the wrong keys. Also, at work I have to use complete sentences and proper structure, so when I get on here, I tend to get a little sloppy. The only way I got through English in college was by my capacity for speech. I have always been a better oral communicator rather than a writer.A little story. My Dad was a big dog with his company. If you did not have a 3.5 GPA in college he would not even think about hiring you. He was conducting interviews for a position and here was this guy. Rocket Science type, 4.0 from MIT, research papers out the wazoo. The only problem was come interview time this guy showed up wearing a pair of bib overall, a flannel shirt with the sleeves cut off and, at my Dad's best guess, hadn't taken a bath or washed his hair in a couple of months. (My Dad can handle long hair, at least he did with me, just keep it neat was his watchword). This gut also had the attitute that you had better hire me since I am doing you a favor by even coming to this interview. He also thought there should be another zero at the end of what they were offering. This was one of the shortest interviews my Dad ever gave, about three minutes, his eyes started watering real bad. When they guy left, his secretary told him she would quit if he hired this guy. ( She had worked for Dad about 10 years) Need less to say he didn't get the job. Some of this is due to the sad state of our public schools. Last year my son was in the public school here. He missed the magnet school by a couple of points, we will NOT discuss what I was told by a person with the school board and since he left the French Emersion Program, he would be back in a regular class. So off he went to class. He was bored to tears, some of things the teacher was covering he had learned TWO years before. I met with his teachers TWO times about keeping him challenged andgive him extra work if need be. But NOOOO, their suggestion was to bring a book to class and read it. So my son spent a year not learning a thing, but he did read a lot of good books. This year we will not have that problem. He is going to ESA (http://www.esacadiana.com/index.htm). Just about to put me in the poor house, but it will be well worth it. The funny thing is I have been warning him that this is going to be a lot harder than anything he has done before, but he is EAGER to go.Kevin Arceneaux

RE: I agree, but ......

I remember when I sat in English Class, I used to ponder why in the hell did I have to learn this crap. Who cares what a "verb" is or the definition of a "noun" or the proper place to insert a "comma" and so on and so forth. Just was bunk to me. These thoughts and attitudes was the main reason I had 4 years of English 1 (running joke with me, but true). Now...as I grow older and grayer I see now what English class was about. It's times like this, here on this forum, where grammer is important for that specific impression from our peers. There are several posts on this thread making mention of the educational system and it's lack thereof concerning the basic knowledge of the 3 "R's". However, in this day and age, our youth is subjected to several "sub-cultured" varieties concerning "communication". I have witnessed the "slaugther" of the English Language (Primarily American) and it's chopped up version of certain words, phrases and meanings. Words in a sentance have been "slashed" to get to the end of the sentance quicker, or because it sounds cool (today's interpetation would be "bitchin'" or heli-cool).
I truly believe that our "young" think, talk and now type this way. Here lies the true generation gap. We "old-fogies" have or may have a hard time trying to transpose their thoughts and ways of communicating; and being old dogs, we're not in the mood for new tricks. Anyway....in the long run, I really feel sorry for any future Anthropologist who tries to make sense of our many sub-cultured languages a 1000 years from now. On a historical note: This isn't new. Archeologist of Egyptian history have reported that "graffitti" was written on many tombs and temples in a fashion that was hard to decipher...until they realized that it was a "chopped" version of the same langauge. The "artist" just made up their own as a common language within a language. It took experts 80 years to figure this out.

RE: I agree, but ......

Thank you Chucksc and John136 6000 GO. I do want to say something here if you don't mind. I know grammar and spelling is very important in life. I do use spell-check before I post my reply or comment. However, I need to check my grammar more often. My grammar is not it's fine point due to gradually hearing lost. A lot of times I would post and forget to check my grammar and I would correct my mistakes. I have a hearing problem since birth and recently, it's getting worse. I do wear a hearing aid and it only solves 2/3 of the problem. Hearing aid is only an electronic device that can help you hear. Everyone gets the wrong idea that hearing aid will give you hearing back. That's not true. Excuse me for going little off the topic here. I just wanted to explain something about hearing it does relate to grammar somehow. I had to go to special school for Hearing Impaired. I did attend regular classes in school and that wasn't a problem. English grammar was hard in both high school and college. I had to take the English class (in college) twice before I can pass it with acceptable limit. The second college English teacher realized that I and the other students (with the same problem) worked hard to pass the class. He felt sorry for us and let us pass within the acceptable passing limit. The problem with my hearing is that I don't understand every word for word that is spoken. That causes me to miss out a quite of important words in a sentence. In the future, I will continue to check my grammar before I post. It took me a little while to post this reply becaus I was checking and rechecking my grammar. I'm not asking anyone to feel sorry for me. I have live with it all my life. I just wanted to make a statement about grammar. Thank you for posting this topic.Ken

However many other things make up a first impression.
Type of posts you make, what you say, how it is said and why it is said. You can type flawlessly... yet post about pointless and stupid things. And people will take up an impression on you, good or bad. Theres much more then spelling that makes up an impression. I've read terribly spelled posts, that intrested me and I took a good impression of the person, although spelling was an obvious flaw, the content kept me reading and the knowledge of the poster also plays out a big role in impressions. As I said you can spell perfectly... But have tottaly incorrect info in your post and you will not leave a good impression.Just my oppinion on the matter, of impressions. And yes- there probably was a few spelling errors in my post...
