Oct-07-01, 10:42 PM (EST) "MSTS will not install" Hi
When I try to install MSTS (yes - I bought the program!), I get the Install menu screen, but as soon as my mouse unclicks from the "Install" icon, up comes a "this program has performed an illegal function" dialogue box and the program exits.I tried MS SUpport, but before you can login to post a query, it requires a PID (Product ID). Some genius at MS posted a link on how to get a PID - you open the product...etc. In other words if I want to get a PID because my program won't install, I have to have the program installed to get the PID! "Oh your car won't start, well bring it down to the shop and we'll have a look at it" Heck, if I lived on a hill I could even do that! Here is my system profile:ConfigurationNewly purchased Abit KT7A motherboard with latest (4 in 1) drivers downloaded from Abit site end of Sep 01. Asus V7100 video card with 32 mb RAM, with latest (4 Oct 2001) drivers.256 Mb RAM
3 Gb hdd with 2.17 Gb available (not the largest but big enough)
AMD Duron 650 Mhz cpu
Win98SR
SB AWE ISA sound cardNo device conflicts visible. All other programs working fine.No virus program loaded. No other programs in memory other than Scheduler and Volume icons. No screen savers, no wallpaper. Recemtly installed Windows 98 - one week old. I ran WD Clear on the Hdd before installing Win98. Friends and relatives in the IT business are also stumped.

Oct-10-01, 11:10 AM (EST) 3. "RE: MSTS will not install" LAST EDITED ON Oct-10-01 AT 11:11 AM (EST)A couple of possible solutions (or not, I'm no tekkie):Get 2nd HD. While the game /should/ fit on your 2 GB free, you will probably not have enough room on the drive afterwards for swapfiling and other RAM issues. Plus, if you get any sort of addon routes, you're over the limit. I'm guessing the gig of your HD that is not free is primarily essential, non-deletable stuff so you won't be able to make any appreciable room. Check CDROM speed. Check if you having safedisc errors. I don't know if MSTS uses Safedisc. MS is using safedisc pretty heavily lately. Bizillions of Mechcommander2 players couldn't play the game because of safedisc. Try checking if your CD player is safedisc compatible, MS has a list of CD ROMs that won't read from CDs with safedisc somewhere on their website i think. Apparently profit losses from piracy have caused Bill Gates to have to scale back on his car buying this year. He only gets 8 instead of his usual 10.Before you run install change resolution to 1024x768 and set color to 16 bit. If you have an older video card you may have only limited options to run the game in and MSTS won't even startup properly without those settings just right. The PID is in the install program (I think), so if nothing else you can contact MS tech support, although they will just tell you to reboot or other things you've already tried. They just read responses off of forms, they rarely know how to fix your problem.Luck,
Andy
