I was stuck at a train gate this morning and saw a new engine and paint scheme pulling the metra train (out of chicago). Does anyone know what type of engine this is? to me it looks like the engine that amtrack uses out west.http://www.metrarail.comthe picture should be on the home page of the site. I will post pics later if anyone is interested.

RE: new metra engine?

That's the one they mostly use on BNSF Chicago to Aurora line. I do know they replaced the BN E-9's about 10 years ago. I think BN had about 20 of the old E-9 that was sort of modified. It was a little different than the normal units.

That's the new MP36 for MK or BLW or whatever they call them selves this week... They have been doing rebuilds of F40s (s0me that are 90% NEW components) and conversion of GP40s into RP38/40s all for commuter agency... Up until now their most successfull units, sales wise, have been their Kit Bashed F40-3s which are sold as new even though there are significant rebuilt parts...
The MP36 is along the same lines... It uses Remanufactured or "new" 710 prime movers bought from GE parts (Yes GE sells spare parts for GMs - IIRC more of them than GM does ) and their own home brew of electricals and computers....
Early reports are that the 1st units were about as reliable as a DM/DE30 with the exception of their frames don't break in two while parked... I thought there production run was put on hold until the problems could be resolved with only 1 or 2 delivered...Kelley or a couple of the Chicagoland boys could update the rest of us on the status if they get a few mins.FWIW, I think the DE/DM30s and possibly early reports on these influenced NJT to go to Alsthom (?) for their new Diesels...
(Not enough GP40 or F40 chasis in good enough shape to rebuild into commuter engines and the new FRA Tier <whatever> regs making life difficult for the Kit Bashers)Chuck Schneider
