No, not Cajon pass. Commerce is a closer in to Los Angeles. I believe their reporting the cars actually broke loose in Montclair and it was Union Pacific personnel that chose to derail the train at this location because the were afraid what would have happened had it gotten closer to downtown L.A.

Geez, if they let it go into LA, they could have let it dump into the concrete trough known as the Los Angeles River and it wouldn't have done any damage....

Just saw on the news. UP derailed the train by sending it into a siding. They claimed that the accident was the lesser of two evils because it was heading in the direction of some commuter trains.

I always wanted to work for the railroad but now that I'm older and wiser(or senile) I've come to realize how much real railroading sucks. They run those guys ragged, then after one tired mistake their career is over. Last week on the BNSF near Buena Park CA an engineer thought he was going to slam into another train, so he hit the panic button. The conductor decided to bail out and was killed, the train that the hogger thought he was going to collide with was on a separate track.

RE: OT: UP Hits Houses in Commerce, CA

The local news said........"UP TO 70 MPH".....That doesn't mean it was actually doing 70 when the lumber flew.I'm sure that happened on the fairly long downgrade from Pomona to the west end of City of Industry, where the line basically levels out into Montebello, Commerce, and East Los Angeles. In other words, the train did have a little time to drop some speed on the level stretch, about six miles or so.
