Sep-30-01, 00:29 AM (EST) "I'm back from Steam town USA!!" IT WAS AWESOME. I went on the shop tour they had two locomotives a pennsy K1 and a Boston and Maine ? #3713 in for major restoration. They had one steam loco running A Canadian National #3254. The Canadian Pacific Mikado 4-6-2 #2317 had a derailment in the yard at Steam town and damaged the pilot wheels and was out until repairs could be made, plus the tender to # 2317 was getting new wheels, I have pictures of both up on the lift.I also took a ride on the # 3254,and a ride in a caboose pulled by a GP7 Nickel Plate Road #514 both were pretty good. I didn't know if Steam town would have steam loco's running so we went to Strasburg railroad first, we stayed there overnight, and I stayed at the Red Caboose Inn, They call it that because you rent a caboose instead of a room, yes i slept in a real caboose. The Strasburg had a beautiful 2-10-0 locomotive. While in Strasburg I also went to the Pennsylvania Railroad Museum. They had 20 steamers,2 diesels, 2 electrics, 11 passenger cars, and 8 freight cars all inside 1 building, plus many outside. I have alot of pictures to share, side shot of just locos and side shots of tenders, pictures of the locos and tenders together, and some cab view shots, when I get the pictures back i'll post some to share. I'm from Harrisburg and I can tell you the top two railroad museums in the united states are the Pennsylvania and the california at state railroad museums. I've seen the trains down at PA hundreds of times and I still love seeing them includind the two GG1's.

Oct-02-01, 10:10 PM (EST) 7. "RE: I'm back from Steam town USA!!" Glad to hear you enjoyed it. I have family up in the Scranton area in Clarks Summit, and Steamtown isn't that far away if I ever want to visit while I'm there. Nice place, perfect opportunity to see a UP Big Boy in captivity, but truth be told I'd give it all up in a second to see another Erie Lackawanna freight marching up to Clarks Summit right down the street from my grandparent's house.....ah, memories... I believe the Pennsy engine you mentioned is the K4, #1361. IIRC, they are restoring it to operating condition, same for the B&M 3713. I read somewhere that Steamtown is the only maintenance shop in the East that has a drop table that can service large steam engines like that. When I was there, 3713 was on display out in the yard (they hadn't fixed up the site like it is now yet), and I still have a photo somewhere of myself in the cab, head out the window trying to strike a pose like an engineer.Ah, but now that you have seen Steamtown and Strasburg, you must complete the mighty triumvirate of great PA train sites and pay a visit to Horseshoe Curve. Sure, it's further west than Scranton or Strasburg, but if you've never been there before, GO! I never stayed at the Red Caboose (only looked around), but the Station Inn in Cresson (just over the mountain from Horseshoe Curve) could rival it for uniqueness. You stay in a bed and breakfast right by the ex-Conrail mainline; the rooms on the front side have a clear view of the tracks. The place is totally geared to train-watchers--a front porch with rocking chairs and outlets to plug in radio scanners or cameras, each room painted in the scheme of a different railroad (even the bath towels coordinate), and no frills--not even in-room telephone. Dozens of heavy freights in daylight alone--but it's more fun when you wake up in the middle of the night and can watch a train pass without even getting out of bed. Not only that, but you're walking distance away from the servicing station for the helper engines on the mountain, and the town of Cresson built a nice little observation deck directly across from it. Of course, you're also minutes away from Horseshoe, the tunnels at Gallitzin, and the Railroader's Memorial Museum in Altoona. All in all, excellent place to visit.Definitely post some photos of Steamtown. If you've got any photos of the shop I'm curious to see the progress being made on 1361 and 3713.Mr. F Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

I have some pics I can post later. How did you like the BIG BOY.? Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Oct-03-01, 06:49 PM (EST) 9. "RE: I'm back from Steam town USA!!" i haven't got my pics back yet, they should have been here today but they weren't. I have over 100 pictures of locomotives to share. Hey Nels you might want to add a new section so we all can post pics of locomotives or other equipment to share with others, I'd hate to fill up the forum with just pictures......lol, just a suggustion.
