The Operation Lifesaver comercial – image 1

I caught most of it on the way out to the car. It was early, so the TV vollume was down so I couldn't here it. I watch very little TV so I will almost for sure never see it again. It was a boy talking to his dog and on a bank rolling to the track where a train was coming. Anything else? Thanks!

There's been some tv spots like that up here in Canada. Some were a bit too graphic for some viewers, so they are not seen as much any more. If, after watching them, a person still didn't get the message...they're on their own. Thirty years ago, I saw a kid get hit at full throttle. Those commercials took me right back to it. Be safe, don't mess with trains!Paul Watson

Ok why the heck would they show a child getting hit by a train, isn't that alittle too dramatic?

RE: The Operation Lifesaver comercial

There has been some discussion as to the effect that these ads havehad. In one such ad, the point is being made that you should never use a RR bridge for anything. Kids start running, one gets his foot caught, you don't see the impact( the editing is very close, tho'), but you do see the reaction of the people nearby.
It can be argued that it might be too dramatic. However, considering that most people, in front of the TV, are asleep, you almost have to have something to grab people's attention, hard and fast. The same situation arises for Drunk-driving spots. There was one that was particularly striking. A man and his young daughter are being treated for minor injuries in an emergency room. His wife, her mother,is in a separate area. A doctor comes in and takes them aside, out of visual range, and all you hear is the girl crying out for her mom.
In these days of almost casual attitudes to uber-violence, and its variants, you can't make a statement about something as important than this, unless it is sometimes overly dramatic, over the top. A shame really, but that's just the way it is. If it was up to me, they'd be showing the video shot during the investigation, as the police see it. Watch that a couple of times, and you might think a little harder about crossing that bridge, or driving around the crossing gates,or driving the snowmobile down the tracks. Just be cool PW Paul Watson

Back when I was 12 years old I saw something that will forever be burned in my mind: the aftermath of someone getting "peeled". I never got closer than 100 feet to the site, but it was too close for me. It was later reported that the victim was a depressed teenager who committed suicide. It's sad enough that some people feel it necessary to take their own life, but suicide by train will put not only loved ones through an undeserved living hell, but also a total stranger (the engineer). I don't think the fact that that teen was deliberately trying to kill himself has made it one bit easier for that engineer. Jonathan Nikiforovs.

You don't have to go that far. We all know there are only 2 sure things in life, death and taxes. Neither is unavoidable. No point in thinking " what if", you'll deal with it when the time comes. Maybe it never will, and you can die in your extreme old age, in your sleep. All I know is, that had they put all this, in the warranty book, before I got here, I woulda said "No Way!" On the other hand, I can think of no better time than now to be alive. I am thankful for many things, not the least of which, is lessons learned. We're here, aren't we? Keep 'em green! Paul Watson

RE: The Operation Lifesaver comercial

You are missing the point. Its precisely what they want you to think about. It happen too many times, and its only one example. They had one where a guy with his kids can't wait at the crossing and drives past a few cars ,right in front of the train. Sure enough, it happened for real . A guy, talking on his cell phone drove around a line of cars and got hit. Bad enough for him, his little girl was with him too.
Some times you have to hit people really hard to get their attention. Once you've got it, you have to keep it until you get the message across,... to wit, if you do stupid things, some bad things can happen.
On average, 50,000 people across the USA, die in traffic accidents every holiday weekends. Where's the outrage in that? Its gone, 'cos you see it on the six o'clock news every night, and it wasn't you or anybody you know, so hey?!.
Listen, the world is a beautiful, brutal place. Always has been, always will be. We made it this far... Paul Watson

>too. We had one like that in Southern Ontario a while ago. The crossing was one of those ungated but signaled crossings, if I remember correctly. The man had his toddler daughter with him and was on the cell phone to his wife (I think the reports said they were separated) and had given the cell to his daughter so she could talk to her mum. A witness said she thought it was "cute" the way he had given the cell to his daughter. I've always thought it's stupid for a driver to be messing around with cell phones while driving. He saw to train too late. Mum heard part of the crash on the phone before it went dead.John

I was watching this one show on train wrecks, and they saved the most dramatic for last. There were a group of people at a station, and next to the station was a railroad crossing. Now a train was parked at the station and this one couple thought that train was causing the railroad crossing flashing lights and bell. Well they crossed the first one then all the sudden another train came right up beside the parked one and well the picture turned white just as the couple was about to get hit by that second train.

RE: The Operation Lifesaver comercial

> There were a group of people at a stationThat was Girl-Train - shot sometime during the 1970's. BN line; location: unknown.A couple (I beleive a father and his young daughter - 12yr old perhaps) were making a dash to cross a series of tracks near a station. Someone shooting with a camera (probably a Super-8mm) was focused on the scene of the waiting locomotive (a Burlington Northern E8/9) and passengers. A couple ("father/daughter") appeared in the scene about 20-feet in front of the camera and began making a dash accross the tracks because (if I remember correctly) the gates had come down, or that the bells were ringing. An oncoming passenger train - another one pulled by a BN E8/9, was doing 60 past the station (towards the camera) blowing its horn (there's sound in the clip). The "father" saw the train, stopped and turned away, but the "daughter kept right on going. At the last moment, she "saw" the locomotive, faultered slightly in her step and was smacked from the engineer's side; knocking the girl right past and to the right of the person holding the camera. She looked like a rag doll at this point. The entire clip spans all of 15-seconds and is horrific to watch. And although the quality is grainy and no blood is shown, the graphic image of the girl flying through the air is enough to make anyone appreciate that our bodies are no match for the power and weight of a speeding train. The crossing gates, bells and horns are there for a reason.Cheers!

RE: The Operation Lifesaver comercial

Actually it was a woman in her late twenties. She ran up from behind the man in the film. He heard it, she heard it, but already had her feet past the first rail. The way she was thrown was precisely like that, of the youngster I saw getting hit years ago. Metraup, there may have been no blood during the filming, But a 150 lb human struck by a 100 ton locomotive moving at 50 miles an hour, is not going to survive. From my own experience as a witness, I can tell you, every bone in her body was shattered. internal injuries were massive, and there would have been instant, overwhelming blood loss. Mercifully. death would have came instantly.
The teenager killed in front of me, was struck by a F7 loco, thrown about 50ft up in the air and landed about 50 yards from the point of impact, very close to me and other witnesses.
Trust me, it is not something you want to see. Paul Watson

Paul
Someone posted the link where you could download the clip, I had always seen the edited version and the full version, while disturbing drives home the fact that when it's you VS a train you come out on the losing end everytime.
I am also familiar with that depot, having railfaned there on a couple of occaisions since the young lady heard the train coming and stepped back she caught what amounted to a glancing blow and may have actually survived(granted she would have been in a world of serious hurt)except for the fact that there is (or was) a brick flower box just off to the side of where the cameraman was and if you notice the film doesn't stop as though the railfan stopped tape of his own volition it's more as if something(or more likely someone)struck him.Gary S
