Technically, the FerroSur unit would be Central American, since it's a Mexican railroad. Chris Denbow - Baltimore, MD

If it's a Mexican railway, that would be North American. Sorry for the nit picking...couldn't resist cheers,

Nitpicking session: Locomotive #803 (can't read the roadname), externally, seems to be related more to the Dash 8-40CW (length, side vents, trucks). It might have the internals of a D9-44CW, but don't quote me on that though. The two FerroNorte (?) units also appear to have D8-40CW carbodies but, unlike #803, sport the export cab option with angled side windows. The Ferro Sur unit seems to be an AC4400 with optional 'steerable' trucks. Thought you might be interested in these details, courtesy of the Railroad Nitpickers Union. Take care!Kurt

>Normally I could care less about railroad equipment thats outside
>of the United Staes & Canada............Same here, with one exception: Mexico. They use mostly the same equipment as the US and Canada, and some of their liveries are quite striking, like that Ferro Sur unit.Jonathan Nikiforovs.

RE: South American C44-9W's Anyone interested??

Hi,
I do know, why one would use "B" - trucks on one loco and "C" Trucks on the other for reasons like traction or distribution of weight. But what would be the reason for "BB" trucks?Cheers Sebastian

Hi,As stated, these loco's run on metre gauge.
Especially narrow is sensible to high axle loads.
May be another reason are tight curves. Most of the time, the curves of narrow gauge are more tight then standard gauge.Dick van den HovenSouth American C44-9W's Anyone interested? – image 20

Dick,The axle load isn't a problem, it's the traction motors. 6 narrow gauge TM's would not handle the current output, so the power was distributed to 8. They also run DDM45's, which are SD45s with D trucks. The trucks look similar to those used on the DDA40-X.Cheers,
David
